I had a cat that was fluffy until three days before my wedding. We decided we wanted to start out our life together just the two of us - with a clean slate, so we let him go. OKAY, of course that's a total lie. He had the diabetes and just kind of gave up at the end there. We were trying to feed him with a syringe, he wouldn't drink water, wouldn't come out of the closet. It was awful. His name was Midge.
I haven't weighed Ivan lately and I'm fearing he's topping up to 12lbs despite being on a regimented quantity of food. He was 11lb 13oz or something at his last vet visit about a year ago. He is a larger boned (broad & stocky, not fine) kitty and pretty long, length of my leg from foot to knee not including tail.
"Siberians express the three natural types of feline fur: guard hairs, awn hairs, and down. These three layers protect the cat from the Russian weather extremes, and provide a hardy, easy to care for coat today. The fur is textured but glossy, which decreases the occurrence of matting."
What they don't say is that this makes him like a duck - water tends to bead off him rather than soaking in easily. Bathing him takes 2x as long (which is why I only do it once or twice a year when I can have help) because its so hard to get anything to penetrate down to his skin.
