I think Laurel is totally recognizable as a name. We have family friends who just named their baby Livia, though, and I foresee a lifetime of "nope, no O" for her.
Love of my life baby boy born 11/11. One and done not by choice; 3 years of TTC yielded 4 MMC and 2 CPs, through 4 IUIs and 2 IVFs. Focusing on making the world a better place instead...and running.
My good friend is Laurel (41yrs old). Its been on my name list since DD1 (before I knew friend). I really like it but I honestly didn't want to use it since I know one now...lol. No mix up. My other good friend is Lauren ironically.
DD's name means 'bitter.' I never gave it a second thought. I wouldn't even know that unless I googled it when were picking out names. No one is going to google Mara to see what it "means." I think Mara Elizabeth is the best name you've told us about so far.
That being said, I drove myself CRAZY looking at girl names, and when I finally found the right one, I just knew it.

Ok, weird side note. I hadn't talked to (or even thought about Lauren) in 1.5-2months....Soon as I posted this, I mentioned her name to my DH (because she's pg & I was wondering if she had her baby) & my phone rang & it was her. Sooooo...weird! Alright, carry on. Lol
I'm a Lauren Elizabeth and I always thought that sounded fine, but I think Elizabeth is about to hit as a huge middle name again as the granddaughters of the 50's Elizabeth's (like my mom) are being born. If you care.
FTR - I would pronounce Mara as Mare-uh at first blush.
I still like Mara though (the way you plan to pronounce it). I like Laurel more though. Actually I sort of love it. I would choose a simple MN - Jane is perfect!
Fwiw I think it's hard to get any name perfect. I have a friend named Shelby, people think it's Shelley. A friend Leah people think is Lee. I get either Hailey or Amy out of my name (Hailey with a B) and those are all names I would not expect people to confuse as often as it happens. Also DD gets Scarlett for Charlotte all the time.
I work with one. People seem to get it easy enough. It may help we don't have a Laura or Lauren in the group. People get really confused when there is say a Kristin and Kirsten and call both by the same name.
