Oh and I hate the "I don't want to see it" argument. THEN LOOK AWAY! Nobody is making you watch. If you're looking at me long enough to actually see my areola you're the odd one, not me!
Oh my. You have to share what kind of comments she gets.
Also, how are you seeing areola if the kid is eating?
I have giant boobs and sure you could see a hell of a lot of boob if I didn't use a cover, but not areola...
Eta: Fwiw, I always used a cover, shirt up/shirt down, or a blanket to cover whatever was showing anyway. But that was more for my own comfort than the comfort of others.

I try to do the one shirt over and one shirt under, but sometimes, I just don't care. I really don't see what the big deal is to people. I mean no one bats an eye about a man's areola

I BF in public all.the.time with an eight month old. It is nearly impossible to see my nipple or really any of my breast. Maybe that's because I have small breasts, but you would really need to look hard. I'm more covered by my baby and clothes than a Victoria Secret's advert at the mall.
If I try to cover him now, he thinks I'm playing peek-a-boo.
I also have a preschool aged son and I honestly don't think he would notice or care another mom BF. In fact, he sees other moms nursing and doesn't pay attention either.
But then again, I'm liberal when it comes to the body. We all have a body and body parts. My breasts are part of me and lots of people in Greece and Spain have seen them too!!
I was not comfy NIP without a cover. That's me. I give zero shits about anyone else's areolas.
It's not like nursing moms are the equivalent of that couple fucking in a pool for all the kids to see. Who's thread was that?? Yeah that's not a cool public display of exposed flesh.
I can't breastfeed without showing my entire boob so I try to cover up so that I only show a bit. Except at home. If you come into my home, you get my boob in your face.
I don't get why people care about any of this. It's just a freaking boob. Maybe I am jaded because boobs are NBD in Europe and that's what I am used to.
Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but my naked nipple is covered by my baby's mouth when he is nursing. I guess you might be able to see areola if you're hanging out 6" away from me or really looking hard, but that's pretty well covered by my baby's head, too.

Some people have large areolas. My kid did not get the entire thing in his mouth.
I have never been comfortable NIP, so I can't blame others for feeling the same way. I just don't go around talking about it, telling people what to do, posting articles, etc.
But I feel some kind of way when there are articles trying to get me to NIP, like breastfeeding while using a cover is wrong. Those annoy me, too.
Basically, no matter what you say on the topic, you will bug someone. So can we all just shut up about it? Ugh.
I too have a large areola. It is by no means hidden when I nurse.

I am not in Europe and I still don't get it. I agree that there's no reason to feel pearl clutchy over an exposed boob, especially a boob being used for its damn purpose: feeding a baby!
I would not be ok with watching naked boobs/peen/parts used for their sexee tymes purposes in public because to me, that's not appropriate. But this is different!!!
It's like, I'm a woman, and I'm a mom, a wife, a daughter, a sister, etc. A boob has different purposes too. It can be used for feeding your infant, or it can be used to give men boners. In this case, it is not being used in a sexual manner to create boners. I might not be making any sense to anyone but me, but I know what I mean...
Reading articles like this just makes me want to NIP even more. After suffering while trying to use a cover with DS, I decided with DD I absolutely wasn't going to use one. I decided that I really don't fucking care if NIP makes someone else uncomfortable. Too fucking bad, LOOK AWAY. I NIP today on a bench at Wegmans (bigggg grocery store). The bench faces the checkout lines, so probably 100+ people saw me NIP today. Guess what? Absolutely nobody noticed. I was discreet, I didn't draw attention to myself. Nobody noticed me, nobody made eye contact. A pair of sweet old ladies told me I was doing a great job, actually. I've NIP without a cover at Target, Chick-Fil-A, numerous doctor's offices, the DMV, and countless other places. I have just as much of a right to feed my child as any other parent does. Seriously, fuck the author of this article and @this your "friend" is an uptight twat.
rugbywife @littlemoxie I suppose you're correct, my areola probably wasn't fully covered when nursing. Mostly my point was that the parts you would definitely see (like in the pictures @vicmo posted up thread) are parts you could see even if you were wearing a revealing bathing suit. It's not like your areola is hanging allll the way out, because generally the baby is covering most or all of it.
I agree that no matter what side people take it ends up being an ugly argument.
I always covered up for my own comfort, partially because the size of my breasts made it difficult to nurse discretely without some sort of cover. But I also didn't have a baby who minded being covered 90% of the time. If he had, all bets would have been off because he'd need to eat and he was a bottle refuser.
Oh, and a perhaps more unpopular opinion: I think that women in the US are generally a part of the problem with this breastfeeding debate. We're always like "don't sexualize this!" and "we're just feeding our babies, that's what boobs are for!" but then spend a lot of time and money worrying about how good our boobs look for essentially sexualized purposes. Or covering them up all the time and being prudish about it (ie, we don't have nude beaches like France does - it is problematic for a woman's nipples to show here in any other circumstance other than breastfeeeding). Remember Janet's "wardrobe malfunction"?
It seems a bit like trying to have it both ways. Boobs are super special, secret and hot - except when we're breastfeeding, in which case anyone who thinks about sex is a pervert.
I wonder if San! in the Kalahari that never wear bras and always have their boobs showing are given any special sort of shit for breastfeeding? It seems unlikely.
LOL This is kind of what I said in my second post. Well, not in so many words, but yeah. lololol Whooops.
I guess for me I DO see a difference in the sexual aspect of boobs vs using them for nursing. Idk. But your post made me go, "Ugh oh she means me!" (wilted)

I had a similar post show up on my feed from an old college friend. She does not have kids, she was just going on and on about how it is so easy to go into a bathroom and Feed your kid there rather in "plain sight". I told her next time she goes out, to go ahead and take her burger to bathroom to eat it. She commented back that it wasn't the same, I un-friended her ignorant ass that day!

Miiiiiiiine!
And I'm totally thinking about nursing poolside now!! My areolas are HUGE and will show!!!!
ETA: finding a way to lactate in the water in front of them totally crossed my mind but I didn't want to equate the two acts...,

The women I know who are prudish about exposed boobs (like in your Janet example) are always anti-NIP, while the women I know who are pro-NIP couldn't have cared less about Janet's wardrobe malfunction, and would not care in the least about topless beaches. You can't make sweeping generalizations about the female population of the US.
