We don't turn on the air conditioning at all if nobody is home.
I'm so puzzled.
I didn't know leaving it on appears to be common practice.
If I left my a/c off during the day it would be 90+ degrees in my house when I got home. It takes HOURS to get the house cooled off from that. It's not efficient.
If you thermostat is at 68, is your house actually 68? Or is it hotter than that because your air conditioner is inefficient?
I set at 78 when home and am freezing sometimes and move it up to 80.
Our A/C is very cold. I often find my baby in a hoodie, leggings, and socks when I come home because the nanny has bundled her up.
I usually have a blanket over my legs if I'm on the couch, but otherwise I don't wear extra layers. I'm in a maxi dress and I'm comfortable.
I grew up like this too though, so I'm used to it.
My husband, on the other hand, had parents that NEVER turned it on, so I think he's still rebelling and refuses to be hot ever. None of us, including M, can sleep if it's 70+ in the house.

We keep ours on, set to 80, when we aren't home. Like PP mentioned, it's less taxing to only fluctuate a few degrees at a time. In our case we want the dogs to be comfortable, too.

I like to be comfortable and I'm comfortable at a cooler temperature. I need to sleep under a down comforter every night and I could not do that if I didn't keep it cool.

So, mofongo, let's say you went on a two-week vacation.
Your A/C would be on that whole time?
73, it's 73 when we're not home, it's 68/69 when we're home. It's hot as balls here, I have 2 units, they are newish and serviced 2x/year. During the day when it's set at 68, it's usually about 71/72. It doesn't run constantly, it takes breaks. YOU PEOPLE DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT IT'S LIKE TO LIVE IN HELL WITH 100% HUMIDITY!!!
There there. Let's go drink in our houses where the white wine stays cold.
Ours is set at 68 pretty much the entire time we have a heat wave- so a couple of weeks to a month every year. The rest of the time we're able to open windows early I the morning and at night to help cool down the house. Our bills average about $100/month on the summer and $20/month in the winter.
