Yes, we have an iMac in the kitchen area. Sometimes I put on Netflix while I'm cooking. I usually use my iPad or phone if I need to look up recipes, though.
I just use my laptop. I don't see how a laptop could be more easily dirtied than your current set up. In fact, you'd have to scrub down that monitor if my H made spaghetti sauce in your kitchen, lol.
It's easy for my H to take apart a pc, clean it out, replace any parts and put it back together.
It's a pain in the ass for him to take a laptop apart and do the same (lol I know this because when I was a broke college student and couldn't afford to buy a laptop he took my netbook apart and replaced the RAM and wifi thing).
So if splatters break something on a pc, no big deal. We usually have older versions of pc parts anyway.
These are all things that my H/I want when we build. It doesn't make sense to install any techy stuff in our current house because of the area we live in but I want a Nest thermostat so bad. My thoughts on having a computer area in the kitchen is it would also be a family computer/a place for future kids to work where I could monitor them.
I also left out the 8 cam security system that's connected to his smart phone, and our security system is also connected to his smart phone so we can set it from anywhere. Oh and a weather station that reports to wunderground.com....
His next project is home-automated lighting.
I just let him do.
Lol I'm a little scared for when we get a house, because H will only do so much in an apt, but he has plans for when we get a house. We have a pc running all the entertainment stuff now.

Yes, but there's a built in desk to the left of our fridge; the stove and island are on the other side of the kitchen, so no worry about food mess getting onto my iMac. I wouldn't intentionally put a computer in the kitchen for recipe use though. That's what iPads are for!
