So I have a 2010 Subaru Legacy that I want to sell. We really need a larger car with the two dogs we have and I think we are going with a Chevy Equinox. I was originally just going to trade in my car at the dealership but two dealers I went to really low balled me and refused to come up. So I think we are going a different route. I've never sold a car before, how do people do it? KBB says it's worth 12-14k on a private sale do I market it as 14k? The dealerships each offered 7500-8000. I want to do this as easy as possible. What about auto trader or something of that sort? How does that work? The closest one is kind of far from my house. Thanks!
Have you tried Carmax? I've heard ppl say they lowball, but we were really happy with what they have us. H spent a few hours detailing the truck beforehand, which I think helped.
We've used autotrader.com. We sell privately using their on-line listing service. If you are in a hurry, you could try Carmax. I am guessing that's what you meant when you said "far from my house". Selling it privately is more "effort" because a dealer, Carmax or any used dealer wants to make a percentage of your sale. With private selling, you keep more in your pocket. You can easily find the documents and requirements to sell it yourself.
We sold a car on Craigslist no problem. We required cash only and listed a little above what we truly wanted for it. My parents also sold a few that way and met people at their bank to get a certified check if they were getting a loan for it.
We parked my Camry at a store off a busy road. Made sure it was clean, put For Sale and the price in the windshield, details (mileage, etc) on a piece of paper we taped inside the passenger door. We got a call 30 minutes after we left it there. Asked $2750, got $2500.
I think it might be a little more difficult to sell yours because you are wanting a higher price, but I bet you'll find buyers. You might also try listing it on your local b/s/t FB page. I see cars on ours often, and they usually seem to sell.
I'll also add we sold one car through Craigslist, too. However, it was kind of a special case. Posted on craiglists that it ran, but needed tags and inspections and was 12 years old. Basically, we had 48 hours to get rid of it before the HOA towed it.
I love the story bc we wanted $500 for it. The folks that bought it "didn't want to take advantage of us" and gave us $1000. The actually negotiated UP!
We've sold two cars through Carmax. It was much better than the dealership was offering, $12K vs. 4K for one car! We probably could have gotten a bit more from CL or private party, but this was so easy and fast that I would definitely do it again.

We sold knew car to Carmax and ended up with a decent deal as the car wasn't in great shape. We listed our last vehicle on some local FB sites, and had a lot of interest, but it was taking forever with the messages back and forth. We went to Carmax and they offered 3500 when kbb trade in was listed at 5k. Went to autotrader and noticed they have an option to get a dealer quote. We ended up selling to their dealer the next day for 4900.
I listed a car on autotrader.com and got close to my asking price. We met in public places and they gave me a cashiers check for the total price. It was super easy.
DH has sold several lesser quality vehicles on Craigslist or by sticking a for sale sticker in the windshield. We just needed to sign the title over and I think issue a bill of sale to the buyer.
The correct answer is to hold on to it another year or so until I'm ready to get rid of my jeep so you can sell it to me
My real answer is Craig's list, a few of my coworkers have bought and sold that way recently and had good experiences.
Just buy it now. I'll even give you the friends and family discount.
Thanks everyone. I am probably going to list on craigslist later next week. I want to buy my new car first I think and then sell it so I don't have to worry about being carless.
