The National Building Museum, which hosted a BIG Maze in its Great Hall last year, is now the site of an indoor beach. Their newest exhibition is aptly titled The BEACH and features an immersive installation by experimental design firm Snarkitecture. The 10,000-square-foot space is filled with an “ocean” of one million translucent polyethylene balls and a carpeted deck that’s complete with lounge chairs.
Although the installation presents a beach-like setting, it uses creative liberties to interpret the idea of an oceanside environment. The entire piece is clad in white and its 50-foot wide “shoreline” includes neutral-colored umbrellas and seating, while the two shipping containers’ worth of balls engulf swimmers in a ghostly quagmire. The entire piece culminates in an opposite-facing mirrored wall which creates the illusion of a seemingly infinite sea.
Visitors are welcome to “swim” in the ocean or dangle their feet off the pier. The BEACH also encourages people to relax by reading a good book or enjoying a beverage at the pop-up snack bar. If you’re local to Washington, DC, you can beat the heat and experience the installation until September 7, 2015.

My first thought was that these one million plastic balls are going to end up in our real ocean, likely forcing us to have fake beaches like this sooner than we think.

Ha, DS and DH are going next week DS was very confused about why the balls weren't other colors though. Everything everywhere is covered in ecoli. I figure we have immune systems for a reason! I live on the edge.

I have been seriously disturbed by them for as long as I can remember. If I see something that has a pattern of holes, my instinct is to physically destroy that object.
I love that this is a thing because I always thought I was weird as hell for this.
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."

I came in to share my excitement of the NBM Beach (am taking the kids next week...) but am leaving kinda freaked out about small holes.
Anywho...I'm thinking the balls are clear so they can find lost items and kids easily. The NBM has a great kids room and for while it has a huge indoor sandbox. DS loved it but one day it was just closed off, then gone. I asked around and apparently there was dead vermin and human poop found in it. :::shudder:::

Did they not have signs telling meshaliuknits it wasn't a giant litter box just for her?
