I don't see anything wrong with accepting a used car seat from someone you trust.
I can't wrap my head around ignoring expiration dates though. Yes, they're there b/c of limitations of testing. But what IF they fail? I just can't see risking the life of my kid (let's say the plastic has gotten brittle from being in the car through temp changes for 6 years (picking that as a common expiration length) over $150 (so less than $2.50/month of use).

Well, I bought a new car seat because our old one expired a few months ago. I guess it doesn't matter since the seat belts in DH's 18 yr old pick-up truck will probably fail in an accident anyway.
I have found it a bit weird when its suggested that if you got in a tiny fender bender you call the insurance company and insist on new seats being covered. They'll cover them I guess because they have to but all that plastic being thrown away for something like a tiny accident seems insane. But then I feel like, if it happened to me, I'd be afraid NOT to replace the seats because the fear and "what ifs" floating around my mind from reading all the warnings...
the implication is "what IF something terrible happened? isn't your child WORTH $200 to you??"
Yup. I assume you're talking about me? I just had a fender bender last month, and yes I insisted our insurance replace both my car seats. Both kids were in the car, and Chicco says that their seats should be replaced in *any* accident, no matter how minor. I didn't think the seats needed to be replaced, but I couldn't deal with the "what ifs" and anxiety of having even remotely unsafe seats. So yes, I created a bunch of waste and got new seats. I don't regret it.

I don't remember reading your post so it wasn't in reference to you but I think this happens often. I'd probably do the same myself even though I KNOW it's silly! The what ifs would drive me too crazy I think
