My seven year old weighs 43 pounds; she probably weighed 40 around age five. My two year old is 34 pounds and will probably hit 40 by age 3.5/4. Crazy how much it can change.
I think around 4 for all of them. Buuuutttt....DD3 stayed 42+/- a pound for 2yrs. She's finally 46lbs now at 6.
Funny coincidence...we were at the gym locker room a few days ago & they were messing around while I was getting dressed, reporting back what each weight. I thought it was weird (?) that my kids weigh 26, 46, 66 & 86 pounds.
Most of these are later than expected, which I think is a good thing.
Here is my dilemma:
I don't have a car. This means that every time we use a carseat, we will be installing it. I have decided to skip an infant carseat and go straight to a convertible. It's just not worth getting a seat that we will use so infrequently. A generous estimate of usage is 5 times a year, but it is likely to be less in actuality. I am debating between a lighter, easier to travel with seat that has a 40 lb limit (Combi Coccoro) or a heavier (though not the heaviest I have felt) seat with a 65 lb limit (Peg Perego). If H and I are any indication, height should not be an issue, but obviously the Peg will last longer that way too.

I remember my DD being 39.8 lbs. at her 5 year well-check because she was eagerly awaiting 40 lbs. so she could use her seat as a booster instead of harnessed (all her friends were in high back boosters).
I would get the seat that is easier to carry. Nearly every child will outgrow a seat by height before outgrowing by weight.

Light is good when you don't have a car. I had a Cosco Scenera for DD1 when we were carless in Chicago. It was so light but a major PIA to install rear facing. I'd probably go with the Combi, but you should realize you'll hit the height limit for that faster than you would with a seat like a Radian. Of course, the Radian is heavier than either of those seats, but it can be folded and worn as a backpack. It can also be used up to 120 pounds if you switch to high back booster mode after your kid hits the height limit for harnessing. It also has a ten year lifespan, which is pretty long for a seat.
DD1, who is only 43 pounds at 7, is almost 50 inches tall now and was 40 inches around age 3.5/4, which is the height limit for the Combi. She would still fit into the Peg Perego harnessed, though.
ETA: I see that the Radian weighs less than the Peg Perego, so there is that.

Thanks. The Combi has 40" limit forward facing. The Peg is 49".
I won't get away with only buying one carseat, will I?

Not with either of those. If you go with the Peg Perego, though, you can just get an inexpensive booster to see your kid through to the end of their car seat days after they outgrow the height/weight limits of it.

My DD was 7 and my Ds 5, but it was height not weight that made us go to different seats. dD had 3 seats before she hit booster weight, she's a string bean. I would not get a radian or the like for occasional use. The cheap ones are just as safe and often much lighter. I would get an infant seat though because they can easily be installed without a base in newer cars. The peg 65 pound limit is a joke. The kid will outgrow it height wise, long before that. Even my friends giant baby doesn't weigh 30 pounds at 9 months, but he is about out of his infant seat height wise. You can use some boosters at 30 pounds, and we did for occasional use traveling for DD. It was novel, so she behaved, sitting correctly, long before she would have with regular use.

Where are you getting weights for convertible seats? I have had a hard time finding them and there seems to be a lot of conflicting info. For example, Amazon says the Peg is 11 lbs (which it is most definitely not), but it lists the shipping weight as 30 lbs. My estimate is that the actual seat is 20-25 lbs. It makes it hard to compare without actually lifting things which is possible, but inconvenient, especially since you can't always find all the brands you want to look at in one store.
