I would recommend any Toyota brand product. Cars that are inexpensive are the Yaris, Corolla, and any of the Scion products. I drive a Scion xD and it has been super reliable with zero issues and I have about 125K miles on it. A Toyota should easily go 200k miles with minimal maintenance.
Don't you have a Cube? I feel like I remember that from a what do you drive post. Anyway, it should have a 10yr / 120k mile warranty on the transmission. I'd call the dealer and check if you haven't.
This. I think Nissan has been having some issues with their transmissions.
They have. Mine went out last week, and it could be a month until they have a new one to install in my 2014 Maxima.
ETA: and the new transmission is totally covered by warranty. Check w/ Nissan!!!

I had an 08 Hyundai Accent 3 door that I loved. I drove it until I needed a mom car to fit a carseat and another person.
My husband just got a new Mazda 3 and really likes it so far. It is a bit more than an Accent.
We're had less luck with a Sentra, which he hated and the engine had issues before 100k. We have a 2012 Focus and it is disappointing. No pickup at all. I think Ford fixed the Focus transmission issues but ours has a recall on some issue and our neighbor's Focus has had three huge transmission issues in a few years, thankfully covered under that recall. He and my husband complain about them together as sport.
I have a Hyundai Elantra (but the Touring, which they don't make anymore). I have had zero problems with it that were not related to outside forces. It's about 5 years old. I paid around 18k for it and I plan to drive it 'til the wheels fall off. Literally.
ETA: My single-mom teacher friend also has a Hyundai, a Santa Fe. Hers has also been great. They're both good 'kid cars', too, lots of space.
I've only seen like 10 total on the road in the 3 years I've had mine. But of course there is another black one in my office that always seems to park by me! I like the wagon style, but then again my husband got an outback, so maybe we're wagon people LOL.

Good memory! For some reason, mine is not showing up as under warranty. The service advisor is calling them today.

I googled because I also have a nissan, and it looks like it was extended for 2003-2010 model years.
Used Toyota Camry. Growing up my family had at least 2 at a time (family of 7). I learned to drive in one that was as old as me. They last forfreakingever and are really reliable. When my Hyundai Accent dies I want to get one.
