I think it's fine. I mean, keep your voice low, don't yell into your phone, but a certain amount of noise/moving around is to be expected during previews.
There used to be a point when the screen was calm and quiet. Now they run some sort of ad, trailer or preview at all times. It has blurred the lines. Talking during the crap ads is completely acceptable in my book. Legit previews are a time to settle down and the movie is quiet time.
No. H and I can't stand movie talking, even during previews. We rarely go to movies and we enjoy the previews, so it's really annoying to be by talkers.
I am very guilty of quiet preview related commentary. Because i get Fricking excited! I'm not a machine. I see getting mad about general conversation not related to what is on the screen. That's pretty rude.

Nothing more than a quiet "I want to see that," or something like that. However, everyone I end up seeing movies with for girls night out, or kid-free matinee, or whatever, seems to think that talking is completely fine, and I'm just like "OMG STOP TALKING NOW!"
I haven't had any bad experiences with chatter during the previews--it's been my experience that moviegoers are quiet while they're on. I think previews are supposed to be "riveting" so people will pay attention to them.
What I really HATE, though, is all the ads and shit that come on before the preview. People can talk all they want during that IMVHO.

Based on your subject line, I expected to come in and say, "Uh, there isn't any movie theater etiquette anymore!". But previews are often my favorite part, so I hate when people talk through/over them.

I'm curious about this. A man and his son talked through the movie, even though two people asked them to be quiet. I feel like it's just a thing now that people do what they want, totally disregarding the other people around them.

I think once the pre-preview ads are over and the lights go down, it's quiet time. H and I will occasionally whisper "I want to see that" or something during the previews, but actual conversations with regular voices? No.
No. I'll occasionally whisper, "that looks good, I want to see it!" to my H, but that is the extent.
This. We'll usually say if we want to see it or not, but generally not extensive or loud conversations. I love watching the previews, don't ruin it for me!
The lights have dimmed for trailers of other upcoming movies? Quiet comments to the people you are with (a la "that looks so good!") id acceptable, at a low volume. (I.e. only the people your with can hear you.)
Actual conversation at a normal volume after the lights have dimmed and previews are playing? No.

Without starting a debate (or escalating this beyond what it needs to be), it's somewhat similar to the fountain/memorial thread the other day**. Many people believe that the rules simply don't apply to them. "Talking during a movie isn't ok, but I'm just saying this one thing." "Having a cell phone out during the movie isn't ok but I'm just checking this one text." Or also, that while they're aware they're breaking the rules, it's ok because it's just this one time or just this one thing. It doesn't matter if it's bothering others or interrupting their experiences, I need to talk/check my cell/clip my nails/insert some other annoying habit here.
**I KNOW this is about movies and not about having respect for soldiers/veterans-I'm aware they're not on the same level :-)

This is totally different than talking softly during the previews and I would have been PIST.
This just led to the discussion about talking during the previews.

I kind of miss the days of not having pre-preview crap going on. Just a black screen and maybe some Muzac playing softly over the loudspeakers. The same ads over and over before the previews are annoying as hell. And I feel like it's led to more people talking during previews because they don't differentiate between them and the ads. Plus, sometimes our theater doesn't fully dim the lights until the feature presentation, which doesn't help.

In our theaters, the lights don't dim completely until the feature presentation. I feel like this is new. It throws me off to have the lights semi up during previews.
