When I was in grad school I worked out at the university gym. There were these two college bros who would bring in this huge chain to wrap around the bar while they were doing bench press.
I always wondered why they didn't just add more plates, but whatever.
There is this older guy (70's maybe?) who I know means well but is so funny to watch when he uses the machines. He doesnt ever do a full rep of anything. Like with the seated leg press, he will only press back halfway, etc. He spends approximately 3 hours in the gym a couple days a week between the treadmill and machines.
There is also this girl that runs on the treadmill at probably 8+ mph and "claims" she runs 9 miles each time she is in the gym but if you watch her, she will get off the treadmill (while its running) and go to the bathroom/etc. So, she is more than likely doing 4 miles or so lol.

Oh, I know the answer to this question!
People use chains because it changes how heavy the bar is at different locations during the lift. So when the bar is closer to the ground, it weighs less because the chains are on the floor. Then when you lift, it gets heavier because you're also lifting the chains that are no longer on the floor. It helps you to train getting out of "sticky spots." People also use bands to increase resistance in those problem spots.
I promise it's usually involuntary. I don't grunt for funzies. And it's usually only when it's max out day.
You mean dont grunt when bicep curling 5 lb weights?
The faces arent voluntary at all
I literally just weighed my water bottle on my lab scale (and converted grams to lbs!) to see if it weighs anywhere near 5lbs so I could justify grunting while drinking water.
