O.k., I fully admit that I may be overthinking this, but bear with me.
DS (2.5) has started getting pretty good at getting dressed and undressed himself, so I was thinking if I got him pull-ups (for daytime) he'd be able to start learning to get those off too, so when he's ready to start PT he'll already be able to do that part himself.
Is there any reason to keep him in Cruisers longer, i.e. are they more absorbent, do they hold leaks better, etc.?
I wouldn't switch to Pull-Ups just because they're more expensive. Huggies has (or at least they used to) a pull-on diaper. Not sure if those would be more cost efficient, but they would serve the same purpose.
I only used pull ups for nighttime after DS1 was day trained. He has always stripped himself easily, lowering underwear wasn't a learning curve for us. I feel like diapers are more absorbent. Pull ups( and similar) are more expensive and I liked being able to "get rid of diapers" and get "sleeping underwear" when we were ready to train.
So in that case, what's the point of pull-ups? Do some people use them when starting PT in case of accidents? I can see for nighttime, but it seems like there are special nighttime pull-ups for that...?
To make money. My kid treated a pull up like a diaper. He's been trained 2 years and I bet if I put him in a pull up today, he'd pee in it. It wasn't until he felt being wet that he cared. We went from diapers to underwear.

I think technically they're supposed to be a transition from diapers to underwear (mess-free training pants,) but DD always treated them like diapers because they felt no different. She didn't train until we switched to underwear.

This was what we did. When we potty trained Reese we gave ALL her diapers away. Cold turkey. We bought pull ups for bedtime--they were "bedtime underwear"
I'm in agreement with you all. Pull ups are just a money maker for the diaper industry and they are confusing for kids. Yes, cleaning dirty underwear is messy and a pain but it's like ripping a band aid. Quick. I am obviously anti pull up and have never used one for all three of mine. My almost 2yo loves to be like his big brother and put on underwear so we let him. Could you let your DS do that to get him to practice. Let me clarify, he wears the underwear OVER his diaper. It's actually pretty cute, he wears a diaper, underwear and shorts.

Yeah, he has put the Thomas underwear that we bought him recently on over his diaper a couple of times just for fun. It was pretty cute.

I tried to transition to pull-ups because the twins have been showing some moderate interest in the potty but none of us are really ready to fully attempt training them and it seems like such a waste of diapers to take them off every time they want to go sit on the potty (especially since they never actually go). I thought the pull-ups would be a good choice because you can pull them up and down multiple times without them getting ruined like a diaper. Well, it was a mistake. They hold very little, and we were getting poop and pee leaks everywhere. Went back to diapers instead.

This is helpful advice to probably hold off for a while or maybe skip them altogether! Thanks!
I really wouldn't worry about him needing to get the hang of getting underwear up and down. If he can already get his shorts off and on he can do underwear too

Yep to this last part. G uses good nights brand at night because pull ups suck balls, but we call them "special big boy pull ups".

The pull ups brand ones do suck. I can't stand the paper'ish feel to them. The Pampers easy-ups are much better as far as holding in fluids. We use them exclusively because I can't get DS to lay still long enough to change him but he gets excited to stand up and pull them on. Whatever. Lol

Both my kids treated pull-ups the same as diapers. We waited a bit to night-time train dd (as in last month, she is almost and has been day trained for like a year and a half), so even though she KNEW she was supposed to try to keep her pull-up dry at night, she did not do it a single time. She was getting really upset because she really wanted Paw Patrol underwear and that was going to be her prize for getting rid of pull-ups, so we tried just doing underwear overnight and she did great, had an accident on like night 3 and night 5 and that was it. She is old enough to understand what a pull-up is, yet if we still put her in one overnight (like when traveling) she still pees in it. They feel like diapers so it's really hard to keep them dry.
FWIW, we did switch from diapers to pull-ups when dd was about 3.5 for overnight just so she could put them on/take them off herself. Mostly so I didn't have to get up right when she did in the morning to take it off. They aren't as absorbent as diapers though and more expensive.
