H has a networking-type meeting Friday. Basically, a friend of a friend works for a company that H wants to work for and has invited him to come in for the day Friday and has arranged for him to meet with a bunch of people. It's not an interview, but more than just a standard networking event. He originally intended to wear a suit, but the friend just emailed and said not to dress up, that it's a jeans and polo type place. The work is in the finance industry, but as a quantitative analyst. Should he wear jeans and a polo or step it up to khakis and a button down? Khakis and a polo?

I'd go with khaki's and button down or polo. A part of me says jeans, since it's Friday, and if they're that casual in general, they may have casual Friday.
IMO, it's better to be overdressed, than underdressed.

I think khakis and a polo would be acceptable, given culture and the fact that it's a Friday. I'd probably err on the side of caution and wear a button down, though.

Thanks ladies! I was thinking khakis and a button down too. And lol, I almost said we were going to browse JCP for ideas! He feels so weird not wearing a suit for this, but I feel like if they're trying to get a sense of how he'll fit in, a suit is overdressing enough to not be good.

If he feels like he's too casual, he could always bring a modern-style blazer or something.
I'm trying to find one that I'm thinking of. H has one. He pairs it with black jeans and a button down and looks hella chic.

That sounds really good, but the only jackets he owns go with suits. I wish he had something like that, though! If he hadn't just spent $750 on a car repair I'd send him out to get one!
You're in the northeast, so I think that non-jean pants are fine. My husband is weird, though, and rarely wears jeans - he wears khakis with t-shirts pretty often, even on weekends, and looks like a dork. But because of that, I don't think black, navy or khaki pants scream "too dressed up" for a casual day at an office. I'd probably go button down, but polo is cool, too.
