Ooh, Austin is so fun!
I haven't been real recently so I don't remember names of anything particular (real helpful, I know) but we used to love just hanging down on 6th St having a few drinks, listening to live music, and people watching. The people watching is GREAT.
There is a place that sells pizza with a beer bread crust that is delicious.
As far as actual things to do, IDK. We mainly went to drink, haha. The Texas ladies might have better recommendations.
6th Street is kinda fun, but it's the big bar area, so you'll want to stay away later at night when all the drunks are out. I like it better in the afternoon/early evening.
Hula Hut is a great restaurant, it's TexMex/Hawaiian fusion and it's soooo good. apparently they have great drinks too but I was with my ILs so no alcohol for me.
South Congress Ave is also a fun area. they have food trucks, and my and DH's favorite pizza ever, Homeslice Pizza!!!! highly recommend this one.
I'm usually there for some purpose, so my main recommendations are for places to eat/drink, rather than stuff to DO.
I used to live there and now I am there fairly often as my hipster brother lives off South Congress.
For a true Austin experience I would roam South Congress for food and drinks. Prepare for a hipster parade. Homeslice pizza is amazing, go have ice cream at the original Amy's.
Kerby Lane Cafe is a great breakfast spot.
6th street is a little young for me now, but depending on your style might be enjoyable (I preferred it in college). Now I mainly hang on 5th where the crowd is a little more tame and older and there isn't vomit on the sidewalks.
HulaHut is a totally fun out of towner thing I love doing. As a former local people don't really go if you live there, but it is hokey amazingness.
If you are looking for a Texas BBQ experience drive out to Driftwood for The Salt Lick. Tip: don't eat a lot (at all) that day.
