But seriously, I thought of this board as soon as I heard this. I'm glad to see that I'm a few hours too late on the uptake but disappointed that there are STILL NO OFFICIAL ANSWERS.
So Putin is finished with it and dropping pieces in the Indian Ocean?
DAMMIT! I just came here to post this:
"However, the part appears to be coated in white paint, which would run counter to Soucie's other observations in that the 777's parts would be coated in zinc chromate, not paint. Soucie acknowledged, however, that the part could be coated in something from the ocean."
And to say that good ol' Putin obviously had it painted white for some reason.
Also, how fucking long can this take? Either the serial numbers from the part match MH370 or they don't. Come on now.
I wonder if they are getting in touch with family members before making an announcement.
I don't know about that. They have to call hundreds of people to let them know they found a piece (if confirmed) of the plane? It's not like they've found any human remains, or that they know where they are.
Wired says it's nearly 4,000 miles from where MH370 was last seen. So it basically went from Miami to Anchorage w/o sinking?
I smell a Putin.
It had more than a year to get there though. And isn't it mostly "foam"? If it broke off as a separate piece, with nothing more sense to pull it down...it would just keep floating...
I still can't get over the fact that they absolutely know by now if it's pieces from that plane. It really is as simple as matching serial numbers, which would be readily available given the circumstances here.
Investigators already know, but they aren't telling us.

Isn't it possible that there's no serial number? It's just a fragment, the serial number may be on a different piece, you know?

I don't know, maybe? Those parts look pretty large though and they are made up of components, all of which would be serialized in some way?
There would need to be a serial number, on that particular chunk, that hasn't been eroded or obscured by a year in the ocean and whatever turned it white. I'm betting they aren't certain yet.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of CEP first upon hearing the news.
