So we brought home the car FIL bought last year. It was $33k new (gag), is a hybrid and has minor dents and scratches. Very nice looking car and it only has 5700 miles on it, interior is like new. I put an add up on Autotrader and CL at the KBB value, but not one legitimate call nor has anyone looked at it.
We've dropped the price 3x by a $1k each week and have yet to receive one legitimate call in 5 weeks. It's always stuff like "for $200 we will assume your payments" (there is no loan) or "we have clients who want to buy, you just pay us a fee". Yeah, no.
So any other suggestions? I think the time has come to take it to a Dealer (just to see) and then to CarMax. We were offered $17k by a small lot broker but wanted to give private sale a shot. I think maybe it is too expensive for private sale buyers?
UPDATE: We got a quote from a local dealer (through autotrader) for $18,700. We took it to a local Buick dealer and they offered $18k. We ended up at CarMax- $19k. SOLD.
Today is also the auction for the estate. His dad's 2007 Sierra truck sold for $6700 at the auction when we were expecting $3700. Sale did very well, way more than we hoped.

CarMax offers very little. If you're just trying to get rid of it, go ahead and use CarMax. Do either you or Mr. Pom need to upgrade your vehicle? Could you use it to trade-in for that? How much of a tax break do you get if you donate it? Good luck!

CarMax doesn't always offer very little - sometimes they are pretty good - particularly if it's a model that people really want. We sold DH's car there for $3k over what we owed on it.

Yes, go to CarMax and find out.
For reference, I took my 2007 Honda Civic to CarMax, and was offered 8K. I was able to sell it via autotrader for 10K. Similar cars were listed for sale by CarMax for around 12K.
I am not sure if that is helpful, but that is the kind of info I wanted before I took it to CarMax.
Love of my life baby boy born 11/11. One and done not by choice; 3 years of TTC yielded 4 MMC and 2 CPs, through 4 IUIs and 2 IVFs. Focusing on making the world a better place instead...and running.
I needed to sell my SUV back in March bc it was getting to the point where it needed some major mechanic repairs. I wanted to get rid of it before those repairs became absolutely necessary. I originally took it to Toyota to trade in (we were getting rid of a Lexus to buy a Highlander) and they only wanted to give me $9300, which was below KBB trade-in. On a whim I took it across the street to Carmax and they offered me $10,500 ($100 over KBB). I took that back to Toyota and they upped their offer to match. Carmax doesn't have a commitment, so there's really nothing to lose except an hour of your time.
I think CL is good for lower priced cars that don't need loans. We want to get rid of DH's explorer and it is worth over 20k. We will be trading it in or using carmax. My dad suggested Autotrader for my Honda CRV. It is worth 9k and he thought CL won't be the best when I try to sell it this fall.

Also check on autotrader where it says "trade your car". We got 37% more from a different dealer than Carmax was going to give (we didn't "trade", it was a sale).
You have nothing to lose by going to CarMax! We took my sister's car there for a sale quote and the figure was in line with what I was expecting. Luckily - we had that figure in writing in hand when we went to the dealer who offered her peanuts and a pat on the back for her car. With the offer from CarMax they brought their trade in amount up to the CarMax figure.

Can't hurt, but I'm not a fan of them. We took my MINI Cooper to them and they gave us a ridiculously low number despite them selling used MINIs for more than new MINIs (waiting list for new MINIs). I got an offer of more from the MINI dealer. But it is easy if you aren't looking to purchase a new car. You can also try the dealer. We actually sold our Volvo back to the dealer when we moved overseas. They gave us much more than I expected and it took about 10 minutes.
Awesome!! I was really happy with how easy and fair Carmax was. The only hassle was our mistake (forgot the lien payoff certificate granting us clean title - MD doesn't give you a new title, but issues a supplemental form instead).
