Everything is so baby specific. We had to re-buy a few things that we thought were essentially because DS1's stuff was ruined after Sandy. We bought a rock n play, swing, bottle warmer, pack n play (this was gifted to us which was nice) and I'm sure there's some other things but DS2 hated them all! What a waste of money! He hated being put down so there went the swing and rock n play. During the early days, he wouldn't take a bottle from me so no point in the warmer. And he never lasted longer than 15mins in the pack n play, or even the crib. Hence why we're still co-sleeping at 16 months.
Me too! What do you do with poopy diapers, @bunnybean? Our whole house would stink if we didn't have the genie.
We just have a large trash can with lid in the nursery. But with twins the trash bag gets full every 4-5 days. It stinks a little more now that they eat solids but it isn't bad.
So far, the only thing I'm meh about is the K'Tan. I plan to switch to my mei tai as soon as he's gained another pound or two. And soothie pacis--he doesn't seem to care for them (grrr most of the babies I care for love them), but DH and I resolved today to try other pacis. Not liking the Bamboobies--leaked through them today in a span of two hours
Loving so far: Swaddles--woombie and modswad Ubbi diaper pail RnP My PnP with the napper and changing pad on top. It also has shelves to hold his diapers, wipes, butt cream, extra clothes and burp cloths... Simple Wishes hands free pumping bra

We had a hand me down bassinet that we returned because we used the rock n play and then the pack n play. Bassinet was just in the way. Hand me down bumbo barely got used. We have one of those FP infant to toddler rocker things that is pretty worthless- I just kept it in the bathroom as a place to stick him while I showered. Swaddlemes with the Velcro were useless for us- he got right out. We loved the Miracle Blanket.
We never had a swing, rocking chair, wipes warmer, but didn't miss them.

Some of the baby carriers I got were really crappy, unfortunately including ones I registered for, which I feel badly about. A couple of them I don't even feel safe putting DD in. A couple others I just ended up not liking very much.
I do do a lot of babywearing, but almost exclusively in carriers purchased after she was born because I didn't end up liking any of the 8 or so I accumulated before she was born.
I also could have done without the Arms Reach. I thought it would be easier to attach to the bed than side-carring the crib in toddler bed orientation, because it's, you know, designed for it. I was wrong. We had exactly the same problems getting it attached to the bed. And then the baby wouldn't sleep in it anyway past about 4 weeks old. At least it doubles as a pack n play, and saved me from buying one of those, but of course she still doesn't want anything to do with.
Bouncer -it was a hand me down but never used Bumbo, also a hand me down, never used Bassinet, another unused hand me down, lol --definitely don't buy these things! Nose friieda -- I'm the outlier here Jumperoo - another outlier, but my kid didn't like it Pack n play -didn't buy one, but never missed it
We loved the Swing My Brest friend Boppy lounger -- I thought it was such a non necessity but someone gave me one, OMG, best thing ever!
See I haaaated the bobby lounger! In a very sleep deprived moment I put C in it on our (short!) toilet in the bath and she fell off. It scared the shit out of me and I couldn't ever find a good safe place to use it after that. I ended up donating it.
You put it on the toilet?!?
Ours lives on the couch. It's nice to have something right next to me to put him in that doesn't require me to hold him. It was a random registry add and prob my fav item.
Things that we had, and were total fails: - Swing - Arms Reach Cosleeper - Rock N Play - Bassinet - In-bed co-sleeper (the theme is that he would NOT sleep anywhere not touching my body, so all baby-sleeping devices were fails) - Newborn gowns (he had poop leak at least once a day for months, and I had to contain it in pants) - Swaddles, a million of them (kid refused)
Didn't have and didn't miss: bottle warmer, wipes warmer, diaper genie
I freaking LOVED loved loved my Boba wrap (similar to Moby but stretchier). I seriously would not have survived the first 4 months without it.
ETA - the best advice is to borrow or buy used as much as you can, especially if you don't know if it will work for you. For ex, the bumbo was a huge hit for about a month, but I spent $50 on the dang thing. I like it, but I would have liked it more if I would have gotten it for $15 off the local baby b/s/t page.
Skip hop duo diaper bag -- useless! No zipper! Can't find anything in it! Rage!
Things I'm glad were hand-me-downs: -- fancy pack n play with napper and changer. Never used these features. -- boppy pillow. Used the My Brest Friend a ton, though. -- bumbo seat. Barely used.
The swing and bouncer. C never really cared about movement and gave me such WTF looks when I'd put her in them.
I also hated my moby but wish I'd have gotten into the SSCers earlier. I loooove carrying her but the moby was a mess and then the ergo wasn't comfortable.
Ditto on all counts. DS hated the swing, he was like "WTF is this contraption you crazy woman?!" Plus the hand-me-down swing we got ran SOLELY on batteries. Like 8 D's that cost $$$ and got used up fast. I ditched the swing really quickly.
Same for the snugabunny bouncer. It put DS at perfect dog licking/walking all over him level. We were gifted a RnP at 6 weeks old and were like HALLELUJAH this is the right product!
Moby had way too much fabric, I never felt it was tight. I never liked the Ergo either, DS always felt like he was going to topple out the back of it.
Onesies. With DS I assumed "this is what a baby wears" because that's what I saw for sale everywhere. But constantly pulling clothes over a baby's head was a huge PITA. I discovered zip-up footed sleepers when DS was almost too old for them, and I was like "WHY DIDN'T I FIND THESE SOONER?!?" I've dressed DD almost exclusively in them since she was born. Much better.
My Brest Friend (really any breastfeeding pillow at all) - throw pillows under my arm worked best Pacifiers Every swaddle known to mankind Muslin blankets - never used them belly binder K'tan Loveys sophie Bumbo
Meanwhile I loved the bouncer, bottle warmer, and diaper genie. That bouncer was a Godsend when I got ready in the morning.
I was meh on the swing. Same with our baby bathtub but I think I just hated ours, not the concept.
ETA: I HATE Tamis. The straps are too long. I wore Bravado nursing bras and stretchy tank tops. Also, nursing tanks from Target are worthless.
ETAA: I wish I had gotten a BOB instead of the Britax stroller. I don't dislike it but have stroller envy.
Things we didn't have or didn't use much: -bottle warmer -cart cover -big swing -door jumper -ergo -RNP -nose frida -Boppy -adapter bar for my CMGT -steamer and baby food makers -various bottle brands (used medela
Things I loved: -exersaucer -my Brest friend -snap n go -k'tan -bumbo -nursing tanks -toys and books
Oh, Diaper Genie was unnecessary and broke pretty quickly. The rest was just stuff that didn't work for my baby, but isn't like objectively unnecessary stuff. I avoided a lot of the more extraneous stuff (like wipe warmers, etc.) because I'm a cheap asshole anyway. LOL.
I love our diaper genie! I still use it daily.
Me too. But somebody (one of my kids, most likely) just cracked the lid on my 7+ year old Diaper Genie II (the kind without a foot petal). I guess I need to get the almost 3 year old potty trained.
I think I'm in the minority but 100% the Snap and Go. I hate that thing, and I just don't think I realized you could do stuff that made way more sense like buy a car seat adapter for a good stroller.
I loooove my snap and go with kid #2. I got the fancy Chicco one that takes the KeyFit infant seat. I just pop the stroller open and put DD's car seat inside. I don't even have to wake her. It has a HUGE basket, and is super light because it's just a frame. Decent wheels and adjustable handle.
Did not use: K'tan Swing Fancy attachments to Pack n Play (but I use the big part every night) Bumbo
Loved: The kind of ugly, but miraculous, mobile my BFF bought us. He lives for that thing. Bouncy chair Piano kick n play mat Ball pit play mat Rock n play Glider Exersaucer (starting to use it now at 4 months, and he loooooooves it)
So far, the only thing I'm meh about is the K'Tan. I plan to switch to my mei tai as soon as he's gained another pound or two. And soothie pacis--he doesn't seem to care for them (grrr most of the babies I care for love them), but DH and I resolved today to try other pacis. My DS didn't like the soothies either but at about 4 months he started teething and found out he LOVES the Mams. I keep one in the freezer and he loves it when fussy
It's really hard because some love what others hate. Except the Mamaroo. Almost everyone seems to hate that lol.
Boppy / Brest Friend were fails here vs normal pillows.
Also the bassinet we got for her stroller. We either carried her carseat or wore her when she was tiny.
I loved the Mamaroo lol.
I didn't love the Boppy at all, either.
Swaddle sacks of all types. They pissed DS right off. I had like 14 different products and ultimately landed on just sleep sacks.
Carter's receiving blankets are too small. They lasted like 6 weeks and then they were being used as burp clothes. I liked the A&A blankets but there are probably other bigger blankets out there as well.
The bumbo had very limited use for us because ds's legs were too fat to fit in the holes. I would at least wait and see on that if you were thinking about getting one. Also people sell them frequently in CL.
Same. DS is using it to practice standing, however.
