If it's nearby, I'll deliver it to them because you know, karma and it's the right thing to do.
I've never had anyone's stuff delivered to my house though. One time, my camera got delivered to the wrong house by UPS. No idea how the fuck that happened and apparently, UPS tried to get it from where they delivered it but no avail. I got a refund but that really sucked.
I once got an important looking letter that was addressed to a daycare down the street. So I hopped in the car and drove it down there. They didn't even say thank you!
But, still, if it was quick and easy to deliver the package myself I would. Otherwise I would just call the mail carrier (UPS, post office, FedEx, etc) and tell them to come get it.
Usually when I get mail delivered to the wrong address it's because it's our same house numbers, just one street over.
I've gotten a set of nice headphones and something off of etsy, so I just walked them over to the houses. I had accidentally opened the headphones, but they were really happy to get them anyway.
I'll admit I'm nosy, so I looked up the etsy seller to see what they sold and it was handmade raw diamond necklaces! If I were less scrupulous I could have had diamonds!
Why would PBK come get it? They didn't deliver it. Call the carrier (USPS, FedEx, UPS) that delivered it.
I would put zero effort into returning a package that was shipped to me in error. I am sure as heck not going to deal with calling UPS/FedEx/USPS. And I am lol'ing all these responses that are creating work for the OP. Open it, don't open it, who cares? The person that didn't get it is going to contact the seller and get another one.
Really? You can't do something nice for someone that requires almost no effort on your part?

I would happily walk a package or mail to a neighbor. But no, I'm not making calls or delivering packages across town.

I wish the person that got DS' vacation clothes had either called the carrier to alert them it was misdelivered or walked it over to us (if they were close). The store I ordered them from online only offered a refund, not another set of clothes, since the package was marked as delivered. I wouldn't have received them in time if I had ordered another set with my refund.

This didn't happen much with mail at our old house, but we were always getting packages and food deliveries for an address that had the same house number as us, and a very similarly spelled street (like "Matthew" and "Mathew"). For the packages we just put back in the mailbox or called ups/fedex, for the food deliveries we just said they had the wrong address.
The worst part about having a similar address as someone was last summer when I was home on maternity leave, at about 1:45 am one morning while I was watching a movie in our living room because my 5 week old wasn't sleeping, we got a knock on the door and then someone tried to open the front door (it was locked). I ran upstairs with the baby to get my husband. It turned out to be the cops. Apparently there was a domestic dispute called in at the similar address but the cops came to our house. After talking to H for a few minutes and calling their station, the cops apologized and left. I wanted to say "thanks for almost giving me a heart attack by trying to open the front door in the middle of the night." Luckily we don't live there anymore.

But it would take less time to call UPS than it took you to walk to your neighbor, which you had no issue doing. And I don't think anyone suggested driving 20 miles across town to deliver it (unless you really wanted to). UPS would just come pick it back up from you.
Give it to H, and he walks it over to our neighbor, since it's almost always someone in an apt close to us. If it's someone farther away I put it back in the mailbox.
I'll call fedex and ups if I have to, but it's much easier to drop it by a fedex or ups store while running errands than call them. FedEx says they'll pick it up, but that I'm not allowed to leave it outside, so I need to be home. Fuck that.
We lived at our old rental house for three years and received probably 30 packages for the previous tenants. The problem was the address on the package was our address and the previous tenants just weren't updating their saved address with any online sites (tons of eBay, etsy, Amazon). It was a total pain in the ass. Most carriers wouldn't pick it back up since it was delivered correctly. I tried calling the companies on the boxes, but that was hit or miss and they usually wanted me to open the boxes and go through the whole return process, which seemed illegal, invasive and time consuming. The landlord gave me the forwarding info for the tenants, but they often would ignore my messages for over a month (they travelled a lot, I later found). I got everything to the owners or returned, but I was very annoyed by year three when we received packages from ten different etsy sellers right around Christmas.
I had a neighbor from a few bloks away bring over a package once. She had opened it and apologized profusely for not checking the label first.
This happened to me once too! Older lady about 4 houses down. She was SOOO sorry but it was her birthday so she didn't even think to look at the name on it - she just assumed it was for her. LOL. Swore to her up and down that I didn't care - all that mattered was I got the package.
I'm such a cynic that I don't believe the people that accidentally open the package without reading who it was for. I know it's possible, but I feel like if the contents were more exciting they would have kept it.
I know there are good people out there but I had my upstairs neighbor take one of my packages and it only appeared mysteriously on our shared back porch area after I told her about it missing and what was inside. Plus the first thing out of her mouth when I told her it was missing was "I didn't take it!"
I would a) put it back in my mailbox, flag it, and put a note saying "wrong address," b) bring it to the correct address myself if it was close, or c) drop it off at the post office. I wouldn't open it.
Last winter I ordered a LE dress and the tracking info said "delivered". It definitely wasn't in my box or on my front porch, so I called the post office. They called the mail carrier and he said he delivered it. I decided to take a look at my neighbors' porches and, lo and behold, my box was across the street. I then called the post office and gave them a piece of my mind.
If it's not out of your way, I would just drop it at the right house. Otherwise, I would take it to the post office.
We got a package delivered to our house. It was the same address, but minus the 'South' before the street name. There happened to be a phone number listed for the recipient, so I called them and they came and picked it up. They were very appreciative that I notified them. So, I don't think it's weird to drop it off.

This reminds me of something that happened to my mom the other night. She had a friend sending her a package with some sewing stuff. She got home late from work and there was a package in her mailbox so she opened it. Inside was a black corset. She looked at the package and it was her neighbors. She was so embarrassed that she taped it closed and wrote "delivered to wrong address" and put it back in her box. She didn't want the neighbor to know she was the one who opened it.

Who was the poster that had the package delivered and she was freaked out and thought it was drugs? I think it was a Nordstrom box.
We got a package delivered once that was clearly not for us. It was from Bob's Skeletons or something similar. Small box. The recipients name and phone number were on the box so we called him. The entire time we waited for him to get his package my husband and I were trying to guess what it was.
He came and we asked what was in the box. Rat skeleton. We didn't ask what he was doing with it. Weeeeird.
I recently received a package from PBK. It was addressed to someone else living 30 miles away. WTF. I called PBK, they never came to pick it up so I'm selling that shit on the local yardsale website. WTF am I supposed to do with crap embroidered with the name Lily?
Why would PBK come get it? They didn't deliver it. Call the carrier (USPS, FedEx, UPS) that delivered it.
PBK can send UPS to come back to pick it up. PBK mislabeled it so it's not a UPS issue. I only know the correct address because it's on the packing slip inside the box.
I've only gotten things that were intended for somebody else in my small neighborhood so I always just deliver it to them. Last time, the neighbor was just so SHOCKED that it happened and couldn't fathom that such things happened. I don't know, lady, the carrier put it in the wrong spot in our communal mailbox...? Her reaction was very strange.
I don't even know where to post an intro here! I was on TK/TN/TB since 2003, mostly local boards. I was m_and_m.

We get the wrong mail almost weekly, but my mailman H won't just put it in the box with the flag up, he takes it wherever it goes.
My daughter ordered a case of Carmel Apple suckers and the renters across the street got them, opened and ate half of them. H found out from the sub mailman where he had taken them and went over asking, they said they didn't have them - but about hour later brought them over and apologized. Guess they felt guilty.
The woman who used to live here Apparently had a REAL HARD TIME remembering that she didn't live here anymore. I got several packages from Shutterfly, Etsy, etc for months after we moved in.
I brought the first to the FedEx shop near work. The guy looked at me like I was crazy for bothering and told me I could just call from then on. So... that's what I do now.

You can definitely open mail without looking at the label! Your situation sounds sketch, but it happened to me. Slightly different situation because it was delivered to the correct address, it just wasn't mine. When I was living with my parents, I had ordered some stuff on Amazon for Christmas so I was expecting a package. My parents never really order stuff online (and didn't even have an Amazon account). I ripped it open expecting to see some perfume for my mom, and that's how I found out I was getting a Kindle for Christmas.
