Last night at around 11, I heard what sounded like a large explosion, near our house I shot out of bed, dog started barking and dh was woken up. We looked outside, didn't see any fire, no people around. Nothing. We chalked it up to fireworks.
Well, this morning we looked out our bedroom window and saw that the side of the neighbor's house was pushed out. Debris everywhere, siding pushed off, refrigerator hanging off the edge. So we of course are like shit, are they home? How did we not see this? Omg! Are they dead? What the hell happened? So we call 911, for all we know there are hurt, dying or dead people inside the house.
Cops and fire come and it turns out the wife drove through the garage last night. The fire department had to check out the house to make sure it's structurally sound. Thank god everyone is alright.
Dh went to talk to neighbor and neighbor asked if we called. He says yes and then neighbor got all pissed off because the city might deem the house unlivable.
I don't know, I feel like we did the right thing. And I would hope they would do the same. I feel like they should have come over to tell us not to worry, just an accident, we are all fine.

The only other thing you could have done is go over and knock on their door to make sure they were ok and if you didn't get an answer then call police. I wouldn't worry about it, you were being a caring neighbor.

If I thought my neighbor's house had exploded I would call 911 too. Im not going to risk my safety to be a hero and go near or into a potentially insafe structure. You did the right thing.
I think I would have knocked first, but hindsight is 20/20, you definitely didn't do anything wrong. It could have been a gas line for all you know. Is she elderly? Or possibly drunk? Both?

He's pissed at you because they'd be forced out of a structurally unsound house that they would be hiding from the town? Lol, no. Don't feel bad. You did nothing wrong.
If you had seen it at night, you'd have called then (and rightly so). He should just be glad you didn't since his wife was clearly impaired at the time.
All the people saying they would have knocked on the door first are nuts. You think a house exploded and can see a fridge dangling out the side, and you are going to be like, "Fiddle dee dee... I wonder if that is safe for me to go trotting up to the front door." No. No you aren't.
Yes, I would have called. Holy shit. It would be scary to wake up to that. That's fine if your neighbor wants to be pissed, but you did the right thing.
he's pissed for selfish/embarrassed reasons and is not thinking rationally. of course you did the right thing. the house's innards became its outards. what makes him think nobody was gonna notice that???

Dh and I were just saying that. Did they think we would never see it? I hope he calms down soon and sees it from our perspective.
