I seriously would get a card and probably put a gift card inside, or at the very least some stickers or something in it.
Omfg get over yourself.
We don't do gifts at kid parties because we both have in town families who spoil the shit out of our kids. We don't want or need more stuff accumulating in our basement. We don't want or need our friends spending $20 to attend a celebration. I never mind buying a gift for a kid party, but it is nice when the focus doesn't need to be about stuff.
Lucy had an absolute blast at her kid party this year and it appears she is suffering no serious trauma from not getting gifts.
Well, I didn't have the "shit spoiled out of me" as a kid, so to me, birthdays were really exciting, partly because I received a few gifts that day. I also never had these huge, invite-the-whole-class parties where I'd get a ton of gifts. I guess I'm just coming from a different viewpoint where growing up birthdays were, indeed, partly about getting gifts.
In DS' case, we have no in-town family at all, and only a couple of people that buy for him besides us, so I don't think the shit is being spoiled out of him so far either. I absolutely would feel bad if we had a birthday party for him but requested no gifts.
We're all coming from different viewpoints, which I guess is the whole point of this place.

Well obviously you won't write "no gifts" on invitations. The host of this party did. It's not up to you to speculate about the child's feelings on the issue. Just follow the hosts instructions.
It's so funny that the vast majority in this poll are saying no gift or card only. Every "no gift" kid party I've been to has always had a huge pile of gifts. I don't bring one, and often feel like I'm the only one.

And the parents probably were appreciative of it!!
