DS2 (9 months) has a spot on his upper chest that I think is ringworm. I have a high deductible health insurance plan and am not anywhere near meeting the deductible. Google says they will likely recommend an OTC antifungal cream. Would you just treat for ringworm or would you have it verified by a doctor?
Well for your nine month old I say go to the doctor, mainly because I would be concerned that my child would find a way to eat toxic anti fungal cream and would wonder if there was a child friendly cream. Probably not and probably if they got a little of it in their mouth they would be ok but that would be my concern.
I had ringworm a few years ago (when I was required to wear full suits even in the summer - got it on my inner arm) and I felt so gross about it, but it cleared quickly.
I'm thinking its because he wears a helmet and it has been almost 90 degrees here the past few weeks. You're right though, I should probably just suck it up
I would alcohol the heck out of his helmet, give him a really good bath, then slather that area up with Monastat and put him in something making the area inaccessible. Do this for a day or two, then consider the doctor.
He won't eat the cream. He may lick his finger which came into contact with it - but the majority will be absorbed into the skin pretty quickly.
(DS had a helmet. We bought alcohol wipes / swabs at CVS and used those.)

This. Not sure how a helmet would cause ringworm on his chest, unless you think it's just from sweating a lot? Use anti fungal cream, then cover the area. If you don't see any improvement for a few days, then go to the doctor. I have had some ringworm that was super-resistant to OTC anti fungal cream, and some that responded fine to it.

Yep, helmets can make babies sweat a ton. And they can harbor bacteria / stink a bit by the end of the day. You're supposed to clean them with alcohol daily. So I would want to make sure it was really disinfected after washing the baby each night for a few days.
Yes from sweating. He's a big dude and it's been super hot here. His clothes are often wet from sweat. I do use alcohol pads on his helmet every night. I think I have some monistat so maybe I'll try some in the am.
And ringworm spreads pretty easily so make sure you wash your hands before and after. And check the rest of him. When you apply the cream, apply one inch around the edge

DS had it at just over a year old. I called our pediatrician's office and they advised us over the phone. It's highly contagious, so they didn't want us to come in to the office.
