When can you start? I've heard both 6 weeks and 8 weeks. My GP told me not to diet while breastfeeding at all. Yeah, no. I don't fit into anything other than yoga pants and it's depressing.
Which diet worked best for you without compromising supply? I'm debating WW or MFP. I'm nervous as I have a great supply right now - probably due to consuming wayyy too many calories.
I feel like a promotional ad for WW sometimes, but it is truly the only thing that has ever worked for me. They account for nursing within your points allowance, so if you follow the plan and eat all your points, it shouldn't affect supply. I started at 6 weeks after I had Blake

I agree. I wasn't nursing, but I lost 40 pounds through ww and have kept it off for nearly 7 years now
I plan on using MFP. I didn't last time but I know they have a way to add in nursing calories. I'm thinking starting at 10-12 weeks and doing just 1/2 lb a week to make sure it doesn't impact my supply too much.
I did WW while nursing and lost all my weight. Looked great until I started eating everything in sight with my pregnant manager last summer at J&J lol.
I did WW with Lily starting at 8 weeks and I lost all the 40lbs and then a little more. (Because I couldn't have dairy I think). My LLL leaders said to wait till 8 weeks and just watch for any changes. I think doing a lot of cardio affects my supply more than cutting calories. This time I just used all the stuff I learned from WW last time and also clean eating and I have 2 lbs to go (of 40 again) It's hard but worth it and WW is so great! I really learned so much about portion sizes and healthy snacks.
The things that help me the most are; eating a lot of protein and healthy fats and not drinking my calories.
When did the wlc challenge I did start? I want to say I waited 2 months. I counted calories and used mfp. Back to prepregnancy weight at the end of the challenge. No. Supply issues and Andrew is a tank.
I started at 2 weeks with ww. I am actually not eating the extra nursing points bc I don't lose weight if I do (discovered that last time around). I'm losing 1-2 lb a week. Supply is fine and baby is chubbing right up.
I can't diet while nursing by limiting calories without seeing a dip in supply but I did have success with relatively clean eating and with drinking water instead of getting a snack the first time to see if I'm hungry or bored. Relatively clean eating = mostly avoiding packaged foods, not eating a whole bag of chips in one setting, nothing super strict.
So I'm not there yet, but I'll be tracking this time around. I don't naturally lose weight BFing, and I refuse to be held hostage to supply fears this time around. My neighbor did WW starting at 4wks pp, and her progress has been amazing. She said the key for her supply was staying vigilant on fluids and eating oatmeal daily. Her now EBF 6 month old is 20lbs (!!) and she's been at her ideal weight for two months. I'm hoping it works for me too:) GL!
I just try to make healthier choices more often and smaller portions, but nothing crazy. Eta: I just are two oatmeal cream pies :/ I guess I'm not trying that hard, but over all healthier choices. I'm not super strict with it.

I did small, frequent meals, heavier on protein, less on carbs, and that helped without a supply dip, even when I was exercising. I ate oatmeal daily and LOTS of water for supply prevention. So many people are successful with WW while BF!
You get so many points while BF on WW that I didn't feel like it was super difficult. I felt it was almost impossible when I stopped nursing and lost all those points.

I dieted from 6 weeks to 16 weeks. No issues with my supply. I played around with total calorie needs on MFP but my happy spot for breastfeeding and weight loss seems to be 1800ish.

This exactly. I couldn't really diet, but I noticed that just trying to eat "less horrible" worked for me.
I feel the same as you. "Day to night" wear for me these days means that I can put it on in the morning and literally fall into bed wearing it at night. Yoga pants every now and then is a comfy treat, being forced to wear them daily because you don't fit into anything is depressing and makes me feel so frumpy. I went back to WW last week - you get an extra 14 points for being a nursing mom. It's tons of points.
Goal 1: get back into my jeans. Even though it's too hot to wear jeans, I need to feel like something fits again.
Thanks, all! Maybe I'll try WW. I feel like I'm going to be annoyed by counting all the points for everything. Years ago I did the old one, and I know it works well if you stick to it. But I don't know the points plus for anything. It is definitely time to make a change though!

14 points? damn! Maybe ill do it. When i did WW back in the day i feel like i only got 12 points? That cant be right though.
I couldn't really diet when I was nursing because I had so many supply issues. Like others have said, I just started trying to get my calories from healthier options. I think I started keeping track of what I was eating on MFP around the bad a reminder to myself.

It's still a great system. The app is really convenient. It's better that you're not familiar with it because you'll have newb excitement motivation and you'll actually look things up and be accurate.
I also had success with just trying to eat less horrible. And drink less. I tried mfp but it drove me insane. I was too hungry and I think the numbers were unrealistic so it made me feel bad
It took me 8 or 9 months the second time to lose it all and it seemed like a long time but looking back it's not
I always try to tell people early on that its ok to want to lose weight but cut yourself some slack too. It's hard with the no sleep and the no time and the hunger. When you are breastfeeding especially the first few months some times your body just doesn't want to lose and will fight you.
Big hugs it's so hard to deal with pp body issues.

This is what made it hard to do WW for me. MFP is slightly easier if I am at work, but hard at home bc I just didn't have the time to sit down and actually note everything I ate. I realize I am just the type of person who can't really note down what I eat so I have to just focus on eating a lot of veggies, protein, some whole grains, less sugar and carbs and focus entirely on portion sizes. Sugar is huge for me as in I eat a little bit and I gain like 10 lbs. So I just have to be strict next time.
This thread has been resurrected! An update if anyone cares, lol... I've been doing MFP for a few weeks. I would say I only half stick to it but I'm still down a few pounds and trending in the right direction. It will be slow and steady but I'll eventually get back to where I want to be. My long term goal is by next summer.

Great work! I'm finally back to where I want to be now, 1 year later. I think time was the secret much more than any major effort on my part. I hope MFP works for you and you're back to where you want to be soon!
