My sister did. It was her first date and they ordered shrimp cocktail and she ate the shells. We didn't get out much back then. (I hope I'm not still yelling.)
A restaurant, I think Red Lobster, used that as the background for their ad for shrimp dinners. Looking at an albino insect of the ocean scurrying around in an inch of water does not make me want to eat at your restaurant. And I like shrimp.
I have strong feelings about that commercial, apparently.
No,never. But I have eaten fried fish tails- just the crispy edges. Not sure why one but not the other, guess I have to draw the line somewhere LOL . Plus I eat a ton more shrimp than fish.
See, I thought the shell was gross, too. I was just second guessing if it was just me. Because why the hell are you serving me food that is not otherwise supposed to be eaten with the hands and making me get on in there?
Like if you give me pasta with shrimp, I should be able to eat the whole daggone thing with my fork. Unless I am somehow not competent at tail-meat-fork extraction. But still, you shelled the rest of it, why did you stop?
It's like giving me pasta with chicken, only each chicken piece has one little bit with the feathers still attached.
Seafood is different. Are you going to eat the shell of a lobster or crab? NO.
Why do I need a handle? I'm not eating it with my hands!!
it's perfectly acceptable to eat sushi with your hands.
@misoangry
I can't tell you how superior I feel to my H when we're in a sushi restaurant and I eat sushi with my hands while he grabs away with his chopsticks. AMATEUR.

Er...at least I won't. Maybe you would.
Yeah, but the preparation dictates when having it not totally shelled is appropriate. If I am eating whole crabs? Yes, I am eating with my hands, and shelling it myself. Crab bisque? Crab cake? I am not expected to eat that dish with my hands, ergo they shelled it for me.
I maintain that maki rolls, tempura, and pasta are inappropriate dishes for having to get my hands messy just to extract the last tiny morsel of shrimp meat myself in an otherwise not-messily-eaten-by-hand preparation.

Okay, well, keep on eating those shrimp shells then!

LOL.
Oh I *don't* eat them. I started this thread because I thought maybe I was crazy and the reason they left the shells on is because people do eat them that way (and a minority do, so says the poll). Instead the thread confirmed that it doesn't really make sense why they serve it that way. Though maybe it also confirmed that I am way more annoyed about this than most people too...
If the tail meat comes out of the shell, I'll eat that. But who eats the shell itself?
Yeah, but then why do so many places serve it with just the tail part of the shell still on? Why make you dig for the last quarter of your shrimp meat? And in the case of tempura, why fry the tail shell in there too?
Because there's a natural separation between the shell around the body and the shell around the tail. Also, it's not terribly easy to peel the tail shell off and keep the tail in tact, especially when peeling many pounds of shrimp, as restaurants do. Also, the tail shell provides a handle of sorts.
