For a resume, if you worked with a VP of Marketing, would you write it out as "worked with the vice president of marketing" or "worked with the Vice President of Marketing" or "worked with the vice president of Marketing" or something else?
I know this is a stupid question, but Google is confusing me and I couldn't find anything in a quick search. Thanks!
The AP, MLA, and Chicago style guide say that it should be lower case unless the name follows immediately. Even when referring to POTUS ("In a press conference this morning, Speaker Boehner criticized the president's carbon emissions reduction regulation ..."). The Chicago Style Guide goes further and says in "running text" (?) titles should still be lowercase.
This is not what I remember from school school. On the other hand, "doctor" or "general" wouldn't be capitalized.
I have no idea what the typical resume reviewer would expect. What about "the vice president of CompanyX Marketing"?

This is exactly what I keep finding, but my instinct is what v posted. As long as it is consistent throughout no one will care, right? Right??!
In every "normal" kind of writing, niq is 100% correct, titles should be lowercased unless followed by a name. However, I would argue that resumes are a special case, especially since job titles are set apart, and therefore capitalized. Since you set that precedent, it's odd to later lowercase job titles elsewhere on the page. You can refer to this resume example (scroll down) from askamanager.org for an example. www.askamanager.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/resume-cover-letter.pdf
I look at it this way: you will be referring to your own titles in caps--it looks disrespectful to then refer to someone else's title in lowercase letters.
