I regularly highlight my hair and that has been good enough to keep the white hairs I have coming in well covered. If I go a super long time between highlighting, I can sometimes see whites coming in which I will pluck. I have to flat iron my sh@#ty hair so I pretty much have a idea of what's going on back there lol.
A few weeks ago I had a horrible highlighting botch job. My hair is VERY coarse and VERY thick and he just couldn't get a handle on it. I went and spent a fortune to get it fixed and to do that she had to do an all over color and highlights above that. It was $250 for that at a very nice salon. I walked out pretty happy with it, but enhhh...it was still a little brassy and orangey in spots but kinda under my hair so at least it's not visible.
So today I am flat ironing and see just a mega patch of white hair right where my part is and just about fell apart. I mean, I knew eventually I would probably have to all over color but I wasn't prepared. I just had this done on July 11 so...are you telling me I am going to have to color my hair every three weeks...because...No. I can't afford that. if you saw my hair you would pity me b/c literally it takes an hour to just to dry it. There is no dang way I am going to be able to effectively cover it myself using at home dye. My hair is just too much. I am flipping out.
I have PMS and a birthday coming up so this has me in a tail spin so forgive my dramatics. My hair is already so much m-fing work. To do the all over color and highlights it was 3 hours. 3 hours and leaving the salon with a wet head. I seriously can't handle this. I want to go key this guy's car b/c I swear he started me on a downward spiral. She had to go dark to color up the orange patches so maybe when it all starts to grow out I can make some better decisions. My hair is very very dark right now under the highlights.

I color at home with dye from Sally Beauty Supply about every 3-4 weeks. I try to get highlights done a few times a year.
The same thing happened to me as happened to you--I was only getting highlights from a great colorist and then I moved and went to someone else who totally botched the job. To cover their mistakes I had to get all over color plus more highlights. From that point on I had to do box color every few weeks at home to cover the roots.
It really isn't that bad. Only do the roots, and it takes me about an hour from starting to apply it until I hop in the shower.

I do all over box color every few months, and those quick roots-only boxes every couple weeks. Relatively easy and net-net probably less than I'd pay for just one or two salon trips.
I have dark hair and my (many) grays are right at my hairline. I really should do it every 3 weeks, but I let it slide to 4 - 5 weeks. I have a little wand tube of temporary color that I use to get me through that last week or so.
I use box color and do it myself, though. Getting it done at the salon would be way too much time and money.
My front hairline is so grey. I get it colored allover a shade lighter and wear long bangs to help when it's close to the 5 week mark. No more than 6 weeks or I start feeling self conscious about it.
I go to the salon every 6 weeks and use an at home root touch up box in between salon appointments. It's awful, but I'm totally gray at 33 and just not ready to let go.

I have dark hair and need to do it every 3-4 weeks. I can stretch it maybe another week, but it's not good. I get grays on my temples and in my part, so super obvious.
I go every 5 weeks, my hair is darker so the grays definitely show more. If time and money were no object, I'd go every 3 weeks. I hate seeing any grays.
