Jeb Bush Suggests ‘Women’s Health Issues’ Are Overfunded

It was a casual aside during an interview, but it could haunt Jeb Bush in a general election in which women’s votes — and issues — could prove pivotal.

“I’m not sure we need half a billion dollars for women’s health issues,” Mr. Bush said during an interview with a leader of the Southern Baptist Convention on Tuesday.

The assertion came in the middle of his answer to a question about defunding Planned Parenthood amid a wave of hidden-camera videos that have portrayed its employees in unflattering ways.

Mr. Bush said the federal government should stop financing the organization, and then veered off course, into a discussion of what could be done instead with its $500 million in federal funds.

“You could take dollar for dollar — although I’m not sure we need half a billion dollars for women’s health issues,” he said, “but if you took, dollar for dollar, there are many extraordinary fine organizations, community health organizations, that exist, federally sponsored organizations, to provide quality care for woman on a variety of health issues.”

His claim earned a rebuke on Twitter from Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign: “You are absolutely, unequivocally wrong.”

Other Democrats, some of whom are supporting Mrs. Clinton in her quest to become the country’s first woman president, quickly pounced.

Dan Pfeiffer, the former communications director for President Obama, sent a message mocking Mr. Bush on Twitter.

“A few more months of this and the GOP will be wishing for a candidate with the political skills of Mitt Romney,” he wrote.

His campaign issued a clarification: "The Bush campaign issued a clarification early Tuesday evening which said that he “misspoke” and that he supports fully funding the “countless community health centers, rural clinics and other women’s health organizations” that serve low-income women.

“The point I was making was that we must address the hard-to-fathom $500 million in federal funding that goes to Planned Parenthood..."

That amount goes to around 700 centers, apparently, and accounts for about 40% of PP's operating budget. So it's crucial.

What I want to know is whether there are other agencies, legitimate non profits, that are barred - as individual entities -from competing for federal funding? I can't imagine that there are any, with the exception of those who are in violation of federal accounting policies or other mandates such as nondescrimination etc.
