It is being proposed that a local domestic abuse shelter will move onto the property of our church, less than 1/4 mile from our house.
The land would be split so the shelter would be in the current rectory and the church would be able to downsize.
It would benefit our church financially to downsize, the adjoining elementary school has already closed and it is on a large piece of property that must remain maintained.
The current shelter is in desperate need of updates, and I believe they do great things for the community.
I am just not sure how I feel about it being so close to our home. We are considering moving in the next few years (crappy schools) and wondering if this may affect property value.
I presume since the schools are "crappy" that the property values are already it a bit down? I mean a shelter is a good thing and I can't imagine your home value will drop because of it.
ETA if it was me, I would just be glad that a shelter was being put in. I feel like property value wouldn't even cross my mind but that's just my take on it....

Thoughts?
Then I would be welcoming them with open arms to the underused, partially-vacant church. What's the downside here? And perhaps your church can host a donation drive for toiletries, clothes, bedding, and other things to welcome the women (and children?).

I guess I should try to clarify. It's not that I am opposed to the shelter. I think that splitting the land with the church and having updated facilities for the shelter would be a good thing for both organizations.
It never occurred to me that it would be a bad thing until I saw signs posted around the neighborhood opposing the shelter.

I am with the majority here but on a side note, I didn't know they were open about the location of dv shelters. I thought that had to be kept on a need to know basis so angry spouses don't come looking. I volunteered for one years ago but I only went to the office (stuffed donation letters) and never knew where the house was.
I think it is normal to have some concerns about property values anytime something non-residential is being added to a residential area. However, given that it's already a church & former school property, I don't think there is much of an issue.
The thing with shelters is, they're meant to be a hidden, safe place. In order to keep these women safe, there's no blaring sign indicating what it is. If it's a need that can be met that helps the community overall (church, women, families) I think it sounds like a great plan.
Giving serendipity the benefit of the doubt, maybe she was concerned about the partners that are perpetrating the violence coming around? Which is the biggest concern for the shelter, too, which is why they would have every protection in place.
It's very easy to have a nimb mentality about everything but that generally helps no one.

This is so gross to me. Why are people opposed to it?

Maybe you should find out what they're concerned about and clarify. Maybe the church can host a community meeting or the town. I'd put my own signs up in favor of it.
OMG it is a domestic violence shelter, not a halfway house. Anyone opposed to a shelter like that needs to get over themselves with "what about my property value?!?" Seriously, have some compassion.

I don't know why so many people are opposed to it. There is seriously a sign on every other lawn leading to the church.
To clarify, my reply wasn't specifically directed at you and was more for the royal you. It boggles my mind that human beings would lack compassion in such a selfish way.

I'm glad you're not opposed to it. It sounds like a really good thing but I too have trouble understanding the rationale behind your neighbors' opposition. Also why are they putting it on blast?! How shitty.

Would you oppose a halfway house though? (not snarky, just asking)

That would depend on a lot of factors. If I'm being honest, I would be way more open to a dv shelter in my neighborhood. Hence my comment.
Shelters=good. However, I worked in non-profit for 15 years and I can see why this could be an issue. I'm sure people are opposed due to the increased risk of crime/violence in the neighborhood. In our area most shelters are not at a known location, so I do think it's kind of weird that it would be a totally public shelter. Shelters are usually at an unknown address so that the abusers can't track people down. Statistically, sadly, people are most at risk of being killed by the abuser AFTER they leave.
Maybe they are doing day programming or something? Or providing other services that don't leave the place highly at risk of violence?
Serendipity - I know you are close to me, do you know who is running the shelter? There's a npo in your general area that already has several shelters that is great.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

Well the halfway house in our city just had a violent sexual offender cut off his monitoring bracelet and leave. So yes
Because everyone knows abused women are totes the same a violent sexual offenders.
gross. Maybe you should try out ML. They like to accuse rape victims of being fake.
Seriously? That was only two people being and ass and making accusations of MUD. I hardly say that applies to the whole ML group.
I don't know what Nanda is referring to, but come on. One person makes a comment and instantly the entire board is know as "the board that _______" This is nothing new. This is the case on all boards.
Hey I wouldn't even respond if it was in reference to SAHM sitting around eating Bon Bons but this is not in the same level. I refuse to lump that many people together in this subject.

Wait, are you defending the ml board as a whole? Because you know they don't like us, right? Like, as a whole by nature of the board we post on. Plus I'm pretty sure everyone recognized hyperbole.
But just in case someone is confused- it was ONLY a global mod one of their precious elders.

I don't think what you're talking about and what I think you're talking about are the same thing. Is it that one thing or something else?

Not the epic eat themselves alive implosion. There was an ae last night that was sexually assaulted in her sleep by her partner. The 2 people I mentioned basically made smarmy comments about deja vu. Both have now apologized
