I have a petunia pickle bottom sashay satchel and it's been great for one kid. I like that it's a tote bag but can convert to a backpack when needed. That has been an awesome feature. Also it's not enormous.
Now that I'll have two kids in diapers, i have the MBMJ elizababy. Baby #2 hasn't arrived yet so I can't really comment on how useful it's been but I have high hopes!
We used the Petunia Pickle Bottom boxy backpack when DD was younger. It is great and has some awesome pockets. I like the new ones with the magnetic closure too. Ours has Velcro and it's a bit loud. I actually used a seam ripper to take all the Velcro off. After we didn't need the full on diaper bag I used my LV never full and liked it.
DH always used whatever bag or purse was the diaper bag because it was already packed. He said since he had the baby with him when he had the bag he didn't really care what the bag looked like. I agree with him on that, it seems like a waste toget a separate bag for your H just because he may not like how it looks.
I'm meh on the Petunia Pickle Bottom. It has lots of pockets, so I can keep things well organized, but it's too big to fit in many stroller baskets and when all the side pockets fill up there's basically no room in the main pocket. So it's not great with one parent on the go, but with two it gets the job done.
We had a Columbia for DD that's ok. We got a regular backpack for DS and I love it and wish we'd done that from the start. I can fit way more in there than I can in the diaper bag and it's easier to get to stuff.
I have a skip hop and it's fine. However, I'm not passionate about purses and if you work full time, it's basically just a weekend bag. I wouldn't overthink it or spend a lot.
We've gone through a number of diaper bags that just didn't cut it (including the crappy Duo that doesn't zip!). We always return to a back pack with a ton of pockets.
