I just booked tickets to Reykjavik and I have longish layovers in Helsinki both ways. 24 hours on the way there, 9 hours coming back.
From what I've seen it seems pretty easy to get into town. So, what should I do? I'll have my 2 year old with me so any fussy museums are probably out, but she's pretty good about just doing whatever I want to do most of the time.
Also, does anyone have a rec for a not expensive hotel either in the city center or by the airport?
We stayed at a boutique hotel right by the harbor that was wonderful. Our room was huge (all 5 of us easily fit in). www.slh.com/hotels/hotel-haven/
I loved the coffee cups they used at breakfast I went to the iittala store just down the road and bought a set to bring home:)
We were in Helsinki right around new years, but the city was beautiful. We toured some of the churches, ate at some great restaurants, shopped at Marimekko (I love fabric). We also went ice skating at the train station. We walked everywhere.
I felt the two days we were there was perfect. We spent the rest of our trip in Lapland.
I really liked the airport in Helsinki too, not sure why but I did.

Yeah, I know Helsinki is $$$. But I'm staying with family in Iceland and I'm actually technically travelling for work so I might be able to get my hotel in Helsinki reimbursed so I'm not super worried about it.
