I love them. I would never want a pool at home. We have community pools here, where you pay a certain amount to become a member every year. We go pretty much every day in the summer, meet neighbors, the kids take swimming lessons, etc. There is enough water and chlorine imo to counteract the few kids who pee in it. I wouldn't hang out in the baby pool though, but my kids go in there and my baby pees in it too.
Outdoor pools can vary; some are gross, but our neighborhood pool is wonderful. It's immaculately clean and the chairs are plentiful and comfortable. There are even "adult hours" (lol) so you can swim and relax without being splashed and surrounded by a million screaming kids.
I don't like indoor pools of any kind. I can't really explain why. DH does laps in the pool at our Y sometimes and he says it's fine. I've never been in it.
Our YMCA totally cracks down on unsupervised kids in the pool, which pushes a lot of people away, especially those with kids. It's great. Usually the only people in there are adults doing laps and water jogging/aerobics and stuff like that. I don't mind it. I like to think that most adults will use the bathroom before getting in the pool.
Our community swimming pool is overrun with kids of all ages and smells like a bottle of Clorox. Yuck.
I don't mind them. I love lounging around the pool. I try to avoid the big public pools because I can't stand all the kids. There's a hotel pool near me that we occasionally hang out because the drinks and chairs are awesome.
Oh, I would. We want our next house to either already have a pool, or have enough land to put one in. My BFF growing up had a pool and we lived in it all summer long. There's nothing like floating around your own pool on a raft, reading a magazine and sipping a drink. And swimming at night is wonderful.

My parents used to have one. But for me, it is too much $$ (for use june to august), too much work, and I would be terrified of something happening to my kids.
I dont have any issues if they are properly maintained. Thats the tough part from what I can see, some places will get them and not hire enough guards to watch the pools and slack on the upkeep...This is why we stopped going to the YMCA..when its bad its bad though..We will be getting a pool for this reason.
We have an indoor pool at our YMCA with a lap area, swimming area, lesson area and a big water slide. A lot more fun and less maintenance than the pools we had in our backyard as a kid. We're in a yuppie area that keeps the pool very clean and stocks up on the lifeguards too. There is an indoor public pool a couple towns down that is a.maz.ing with a lazy river, fountains and all kinds of fun stuff. The town next door to us is redeveloping theirs to compete. We're having pool-wars around here and it's great for the kids.
Since we have about two months (if that) of outdoor swimming weather and I can't afford and don't have the room to build my own indoor pool like the ones in Million Dollar Rooms, the monthly fee is worth it.

ITA. I want a house with a pool eventually. I love my complex pool because no one is ever there so it feels like my personal pool.

I go to a city pool that is pretty nice. It costs $3 to get in. It's not overly crowded and there are plenty of chairs. There are quite a few kids, but they have regular "adult swim" times and the staff is pretty strict about horseplay, running, splashing, etc. It also is kept quite clean, so I'm not all that worried about gross stuff in the pool or anything.
I would love to have a private pool, but the cost and maintenance is a huge deterrent for us. I don't think we will ever get a pool at home unless we can afford to hire a pool boy with it.
I grew up going to town-run pools and pools at hotels or campgrounds. I see nothing wrong with them.
I'm torn about ever wanting my own pool. My parents had one for years, but it is expensive and time consuming to keep clean and the chemicals balanced. I think there was only one year that the pool was perfectly clear. But the benefits of being able to go whenever you want, with no one else around, is very appealing.
I wouldn't hang out in the baby pool though, but my kids go in there and my baby pees in it too.
So you knowingly let your baby pee in the pool?
I don't have issues with public pools. We have a community pool in our neighborhood and it is pretty well maintained. There are rules that babies need to have swim diapers. I htink one time a baby did not have a swim diaper and they shut down the pool for an emergency cleaning.

Do you have kids? Because LOLLOLLOL. You realize swim diapers don't hold the pee in, right? All they do is retain the poo. They have to close the pools when the poo leaks, but it is pretty rare. Neither of my kids have ever pooped in the pool.
And it is not like a baby will tell you they have to pee, lol. So any time you see a baby in the pool, he is peeing right in there. YWIA.

LOLOLOLZ
Yes, I know my kid pees in the pool.
Swim diapers dont hold in pee-- or they would explode from absorbing all the water from the pool. (think about it for a minute). They only hold in poop. That emergency was because of poop, not pee.

As a kid, I had no problem with the pools I'd swim in at the country club or community college, but now, I'll avoid most pools due to chlorine. My hair was green all summer and it sucked.
I didn't swim in our pool until it was converted to salt water and my parents' pool is salt as well. My hair is blonde even though I've been swimming every weekend all summer.

We use public pools for swim lessons and occasional weekend pool time with our toddler. I have no problem with them. I'm hoping we can join a private community pool next summer, because they're less crowded than the county pools.
I'm also LOLing at the person who is aghast that someone allowed her baby to pee in the pool.
