So, any PBs this week? Any thing to vent about? Any cool plans?
I will just vent - I hate, hate, hate overhead press with a passion. I hate being weak in a particular area that it's that area. I'm working on it, but had a failed OP yesterday which I had actually gotten the week before. Bah.
I am happy to be back at the weights I was lifting before I took my five month break.

I wish I had nothing to report because my baby would get here, but alas, I had another week of workouts last week.
PRd my 1RM push jerk on my due date at 215#. I can now push jerk more than I can clean, which really just points out my technical deficiencies in the clean... I have a lot of work to do.
Been doing a lot of moderate weight front squats with a pause in the bottom. I hate front squats and need work on them, plus I'm trying to squat a lot to help get this baby out. My front squat is so far behind where it should be, but like PP, it's hard to get motivated for lifts you hate!
My whine is that my back muscles are sore. A good sore that worked them out, but still really sore. DH was playfully massaging my shoulder blades, and I yelped and jumped away from him, they were so sore.
I didn't PR anything this week. One of the owners has been bugging me about my running (he's the absent owner we never see). He's one of those sarcastic people which I totally get because I am too but lately it's been bugging me. I run 1-2x/wk and he gives me shit about it and how I'm going to lose strength and blah blah. He mentioned yesterday that I probably dropped my max on my back squat down 25# because of running. I didn't but I haven't tried to PR anything lately so I assume I am roughly at the same max based on last week's workouts. That started to get on my nerves but then someone mentioned me being a distance runner and this dude laughed about it. That is where I stopped engaging him. Go away. A half marathon is nothing to laugh about. That's a HUGE accomplishment for me. I went from hating running less than a year ago to running every week. My goal isn't to compete in weightlifting, my goal is to be healthy overall so leave me along about my workouts.
Sorry, got off on a tangent but I needed to vent.
Sooo, today is overhead presses. I'm considering bailing because of open house at my kid's school. I really should go do that instead of workout.

That would truly annoy me itsme. That would be a good way to potentially put people off from weight lifting. There's nothing wrong with doing more than one type of workout (I play field hockey, lift and run - I'd probably blow the guys mind).

All of the CF boxes around here are very anti-running. Honestly I just think they are scared that they will lose business from you because you spend time running and not CFing and they shame people away from trying or doing other things they enjoy. To which I say fuck that noise and you just do what you WANT to do, not what other people tell you you should do.
You know, I was thinking this as I was walking across the parking lot at work. Everyone else at the box has been awesome about it and being very positive about it and the progress they've seen me make since I started running both with running and CF. He is the only one that has an issue but he's never there to see how often I am at CF (3-4x/wk). I was thinking maybe he feels like he'll lose business. He is never at the box. He's active duty military and has that going on while the co-owners are the ones who run the box on a daily basis. They see me there and the wife has even jumped in on races with me and running trails. They aren't threatened at all by my running. It's soooooo weird!!! Maybe because we have that military connection he feels he can pick on me more. It was haha funny because I thought it was him being sarcastic and messing with me at first but it's getting annoying now and I think he's being serious. I'm like dude, I run usually one time a week anywhere from 4-13 miles, what's the big deal?
On a side note, a lady I met at a local run with a running group said I was inspiring when I saw her this weekend at the store. Suck it meany box owner. :0)

This stuff makes me mad! Why is he determining what your goals should be and then judging you based on what he perceives? What a weirdo. CrossFit is not about constantly lifting more weight or getting more skills or whatever UNLESS YOU WANT IT TO BE. What you determine is your goal and your motivation is on you, and your coaches should be doing what they can to help you meet those goals.
And thanks. Seriously I never expected this kind of "pregnancy strength" so it will be interesting to see what remains once this baby comes. But my goals are all strength related right now, so I'm putting in the work for that-but it's also at the sacrifice of my conditioning and bodyweight stuff, so it's trade off for sure. Lord knows I don't care about my 400 m time or how fast I can do Fran! At least not right now.

Totally random, but if you still live where you did your PhD, I actually live here too and our box is definitely not anti-running. We program it several times a week in nice weather usually... but in CrossFit format (200s, 400s, part of the WOD, etc.). BUT many of our clients are looong distance runners. We have a few ultra marathoners and one woman who specializes in 50 mile trail races. We just had a client do her first half ironman, and she does all the Disney consecutive races every year. Our goal is to figure out how to support what people are doing outside of the gym. We have MANY competitive cyclists and one rower on Team USA... etc etc. We even added a supplemental training program just for our long distance athletes-focused on loooong metabolic workouts and core/posterior chain strength. It's been a huge hit for our running crowd. We typically encourage those athletes to train with us 2x week to supplement their running. In the "off season" they up that to 3x a week if they aren't running as frequently. So, there is definitely support, at least from my co-workers and bosses, for the distance crowd. I mean, I did a half marathon last year and they supported me!

itsme that's annoying. It doesn't make sense to me that some CF coaches do that because 1) 99% of people are doing CF for fun, they're not serious competitors who need to be on a super strict program, so get over yourself; 2) I can almost guarantee you that the 1% of elite athletes DO in fact have a dedicated running program as part of their training, so to specifically pick on running is dumb and 3) if you want to go classic CF then you need to remember that part of Greg Glassman's definition of fitness says to "regularly learn and play new sports." So that guy can suck it. And stackingtens' box sounds way cooler with their approach to things! (PS. ST, congrats on the PR, and I hope your baby decides to make an appearance soon!) Then again, with my coach having threatened to make me run the Santiago half marathon next year, I might actually prefer an anti-running box for myself, haha.
mrsukyankee bummer, but just keep working at it! You're not always going to be able to hit your heavier %s, ya know? My shoulder press is crazy weak relative to my other numbers too, so I can relate.
I think I pulled my lower ab muscles last month while I was in the US - I did heavy squats, felt totally fine during the workout and all day but then had pain starting that night. Anyway, it got better, but doing DLs last week I felt a twinge and am now definitely not quite right, so I'm taking it easy on weight until further notice. Annoying but hopefully not serious. I did spend quite a bit of time examining my stomach to see if I had a hernia sticking out anywhere, but I think it's just a muscle strain!

If you legit live in the Burg area just.shut.up. !!! Omg how have we not met up?!
Anyways, I have quite a few CF friends at various boxes in the area, and a lot of them *used* to be endurance runners. And now they are totally CF, mostly because of conversations their coaches have had with them just like with itsme. And when I was thinking about joining CF, I would follow the wod blog online at what used to be the only box in the area and I was absolutely turned off by the number of posts and number of supporters bashing running. Like, if you ran more than 400 at a time you were wasting your life, just quit at life of you can't run at least a 10min mile, and running sucks blah blah kind of posts. It just doesn't sit well with me that some people discourage others from doing something good for themselves, ya know? I'm glad that it may not be the case anymore but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth that coaches past and present in the area discourage people from doing things they love or used to love doing by spinning it into them doing something detrimental to their CF experience. I don't follow any Cf stuffs anymore because of it.
I haven't posted here much cause my last job blocked the site, so it wasn't til January that I could actually chime in...so I know I'm still a total newbie and stranger! But I've been around since the Nest days. But this makes me sad. I've been at that box since the beginning and worked there for 4 years now and honestly, we love our runners. I can't imagine the other environment so it makes me wonder who/why that scene existed at some point. I mean, our owner is a former pro cyclist. She is not a competitive crossfitter, she's a cyclist and is all about using CF to help her reach those goals. Maybe it just took some time for CF to stop being so... New/fresh/all consuming for people to figure out how to balance it out? I dunno.
We did an athlete profile on our blog on Friday with one of our big runners, if you ever check it anymore. She's a great example of the atmosphere that we have that I love.
Soooo I originally came in here to say that I started NROLFW today! I am pretty sure I used a decent/appropriately difficult amount of weight. I mean Im still shaking an hour later, lol.
Dog-earing this post for a benchmark purpose:
back squat- 30 reps at 85# Push-ups- 30 real ones Bent over rows- 30 at 55# Bench single leg step ups- 30 reps each leg at 30#
Feel free to pat me on the head and pinch my cheek at my adorably small weights
Aww how cute!! Did you use the little pink weight? I kid, I kid!!!
Dang, you knocked out 30 real push ups?! You rock. Doesn't matter what weight you did, you did it and you will progress.

That's really sad that they derail people's fitness plans. Not cool at all. I don't get it. They are out there bettering themselves and CF isn't the only workout out there.
I started running last year after my first comp. I got smoked on the running portion of the comp and realized I needed to work on myself and do more than CF because I wanted more out of my fitness journey and to lose weight. CF wasn't doing everything I wanted and I needed to add some other type of cardio in so I chose running because it was free. I didn't expect it to become an obsession that involved races so there went the notion of running being free. Anyway, since I started running I dropped weight and my CF performance as far as endurance and speed have improved. In turn CF has done wonders for me in the running department. I was able to run 4 miles my first time out without stopping which means I had the endurance built up from CF. I feel like the two compliment each other and the combination has worked very well for me. Why would anyone try to sabotage that for people?
I do have to add that this is only one person at the box. Everyone else has been super supportive and one of the coaches said I have inspired him with my 5am weekend wake ups. I have had many others at the gym say I inspired them to start running as well. I wouldn't let this one person talk me out of doing something I enjoy because he wants to be an ass. He has no clue what my goals are.

CF boxes definitely had to adjust over time. I mean, the whole j Koolaid mentality of THIS IS THE GREATEST WAY TO WORKOUT AND EVERYONE SHOULD DO IT was definitely the rage for people that bought into CF early and it turned a lot of people off. I don't know about our blog stuff in particular but the atmosphere is definitely not that way, and it sucks to know that it was at one point... But hopefully we've grown or whatever that influence was is gone.
Paleo is def part of that. I think it got pushed early by the CF community and now everyone is realizing that there are lots of great options for eating well. In fact, our highest mileage client is a vegan and she's supported in that and aided by our nutrition coach.
I think there is def something to be said for CF recognizing that not everyone does it to be good at CF... And in the early days people would laughed at that. Because of COURSE everyone wants general physical preparedness and to be well rounded etc etc. But that's not really the truth... Yes we all want health and fitness but MY fitness is certainly not defined by my mile time or half marathon time. Someone else's might be. CF can support all goals if used properly, but it's not the only way to support those goals either.
My soapbox today apparently. I'm sure we know some of the same people @drcupcake and hopefully they'd affirm that I'm supportive in helping them reach all their goals!

Those are not at all small starting weights. Well done!

I didn't get to the gym yesterday, but I did that workout this morning. It's week 7, and I added weight and lowered the reps. (3 sets of 8 - last week was 3 sets of 10) I was able to do the increased weight (15 lb dumbbells for that stuff, and 70 lbs for seated cable rows) for everything, even shoulder press.
Today's workout was: dumbbell squats dumbbell incline chest press bicep curls seated cable rows tricep kickbacks Shoulder press crunches with legs on a bench

I'm far from any PB's since I'm coming off a two year break. But I'm wrapping up my first cycle of Wendler 5/3/1 and I really like the program. So thankful this week is a deload week.
I hit 185 for my DL this cycle and my previous 1RM was 205. So far to go.
A vent though. The program is short. I can do a ten minute warmup and be in and out of the gym in 45 minutes. This morning the guy at the front desk told me I sure don't work out very long. I told him I don't have time to mess around. I get in, do my work, and get out. What I wanted to tell him was STFU.

That's really solid after a long break! I like a lot of the Wendler programming too-we use it a lot with clients. We do it in an hour long session, so we have some kind of short workout afterwards, cause like you said, you can get through it pretty quickly. It's been great for some of our private clients who specifically want to get stronger, so group CF classes aren't always the best fit.

My trainer session on Friday went really well. My legs were less sore over the weekend than after the previous session. I think a big part of that is that the previous weekend, I was super lazy, but this weekend, I did a 4-mile walk Saturday morning. I think the long morning-after walk helps with DOMS.
I still have to plan tonight's workout. I am going to do deadlifts. I hate them, which is exactly why I need to do them. There will definitely be push-ups. Probably some cable rows. Who knows! I forgot my gym bag, which has my book in it, so I have to plan it when I get home and then go back out. TOUGHT LIFE I have.
I did my first one rep max thruster - instant PR of 100#. Think I can probably do a little heavier, but it was balls hot in the box yesterday morning and I was covered in sweat and miserable. So, next time.
And the running BS at some boxes drives me crazy - it's also so strange to me. The owner of two boxes around here did a marathon a few years ago, my old coach tried to train for one (and then decided he hated running!), almost everyone in my class is constantly "training" for a race or a triathlon and we have a freaking Ironman in my class (twice over and hopefully she's doing a third). Nothing but support - and changes in the WOD as needed if someone has something coming up.

Niiice work!!!!! Thrusters are the devil disguised as a barbell, IMO, haha. You did awesome.
