For me, I've been so much happier spending money on travel and experiences rather than stuff. Imo, as long as you can afford to take the time unpaid then I think you should travel.
I spent over two weeks this year on oblication travel home to visit my parents/grandmother. Stressful and exhausting. While I did squeeze in a few long weekends in May/June thanks to fortunately-timed public holidays, my only travel plan for the rest of the year is one weekend trip to Warsaw.
There are so many things I want to do, but my SO is hoarding vacation time for our trip to Antarctica next year.
My Venezuelan friend has been talking about planning a trek to Roraima next year, and I'm pretty sure that I will make that happen no matter what. I know I'll still have enough for Antarctica, and if I don't, I'll take unpaid leave.
I get 4 weeks off per year and have to take it in 2 week blocks. I unexpectedly have an additional 3 weeks off this year. I travel during all my time off. Since I pretty much work 6 days a week I don't plan on any major weekend travel and just look forward to my bigger vacations.
I wish my job would let me take unpaid leave. I would so use it!
I have 13 days of vacation per year. I use it all on vacations. This year it got used on 2 long ski weekends in the mountains (I live in CO), a kid free weekend in Vegas wih DH, a week in the Florida keys, a long weekend of camping, and we will use te rest for a 5 day weekend in CA this fall.
Next year my tentative plan is 2 days for 4 day ski weekend 1 day for 3 day ski weekend 6 days for a 10 or 11 (if we go on a holiday week) trip to Ireland 1 day for a 3 day camping weekend 3 days for a 4-5 day fall trip (might put these dates to use for Ireland, just depends)

I am similar to the OP in terms of leave. I can take it whenever I want but it isn't paid. However, I can also work while traveling. Last year, I did not really take much time off because it was an intense year for my career. I spent several weeks in a local training facility and I also went with my BF to meet his family in a place where I'd never been before. This year, I've done more traveling but it is mostly local. Many daytrips and weekends within a few hours of here. I've really explored the region and I've been getting to know it well. I do have a trip booked to visit relatives in a different part of the country and my BF will be joining me so I will be showing him around. There may be more travel. We've discussed something that we haven't booked.
I suspect that there will also be more travel further afield next year.

As for my own travel? I get 7 weeks vacation. And I use all of it.
Whaaaaat?!?! This is generous even for the U.K.! Does your H also get this much? So jealous!
My SIL (in Newcastle) gets 8 weeks paid vacation, and on top of that gets comp time for any overtime she works. She is always on vacation. DH only got 4 or 5 weeks I think when we were in London.
Now he gets 5 weeks and we use it all. We do a big trip in the summer, sometimes more than one since he can work from wherever if he needs to. Time off for a few 3-4 days trip a year, plus time off at Christmas and spring break. Next summer we may spend 5-6 weeks in the UK and have him take off about half of that and work the rest from the UK.

I get 23 days of vacation. Normally it's use it or lose it, but I somehow got them to allow me some carryover from last year, so I believe I ended up with 30 days this year. When my H was at his last job, he didn't get paid vacation time, but his salary made up for it. He's not working at the moment so we really should have scaled back on travel this year. Oh well. Hopefully I'll remember the experiences and not the tight budget!
January we went to Mexico City to see my in-laws - used 3 days February I took 2 days over Chinese New Year because work is slow and I don't miss much, so I just used them for relaxing & errands July I took 3 days for a girls' trip to Cancun November we are doing a 2-week cruise in Asia and that will be a total of 12 work days off December I am going on a Caribbean cruise with my parents & sister (whether H comes depends on his job situation then) - 5 days And then right after the cruise we will go to Mexico City for Christmas - 4 days
H gets 6 weeks of vacation and I get 5. My job allows me to work some remotely so we get around that week difference pretty easily.
Avid snowmobiliers so most weekend in February are long weekends. Uses up 4-5 days vacation. March trip to Tortola, BVI - used 6 vacation days April trip to Cape Coral, FL - used 3 vacation days August trip to 1000 Islands, NY - used 5 vacation days Summer long weekends - 1000 Islands, NY - used 2-3 days vacation October trip to Jost Van Dyke, BVI - uses 7 vacation days November trip to Orlando, FL (work trip) extended and using 1 day vacation.
4wks Just shy of a week visiting my family Just shy of a week visiting ILs A nuclear family vacation 1 week And the rest is for covering time around Xmas & random days off the kids have
So, a lot of time off bulk 3/4 of it is centered around obligations
Between what I earn in a year and what I typically carry over into the next year, I typically have about 6-7 weeks of vacation. I don't always use it all, but try and go on 1-2 long trips a year and then take off random Fridays for long weekends or a few days for some shorter trips.
We would travel a lot more, if we didn't have such crappy vacation. My vacation is separate from sick days. I only get two weeks a year. I have to get really creative with how I structure our trips. This year, on two weeks, I will have a long weekend in Charleston, a long weekend in NYC, 6 days in Tortola, 9 nights Portland & Seattle, long weekend in Savannah.
Last year it was a bit trickier w/2 weeks in Italy, but we still managed to get away for a few long weekend trips. I dream of the days we have 4+ weeks.

At my current job, I get 21 days of PTO per year, and since I rarely get sick and can work from home if I do, I use all of it for travel. Love it. DH and I normally go visit his family in Canada for a week every summer, we usually go on one 1-2-week international trip in the spring, and we visit my family for Thanksgiving and Christmas, adding a couple days to the holiday ones that are a given for those holidays. In addition, I take a fair number of long weekend trips, but I often make up some/all of the time by working extra before/after the trip.
I'll be starting a new job hopefully soon, and one of the biggest downsides is that I'll be down to 13 days of vacation per year (for the first year, at least) and an equivalent amount of sick time. I don't want sick time!
We are both self employed so we can take as much time off as we want, but it isn't paid. In fact, it usually costs us money because we have to pay someone to cover for us and we often lose business too.
We usually each take 2-3 short trips (3 nights or so) a year, but not usually together. Then, we take a long 3 week trip together when business is slow.
I get 21 days PTO. Plus I have essentially 2 floatibg holidays. This is our first year that we have to use or lose our PTO. I hate it because I hate to "waste" a day off just because I don't want to lose it. DH gets 3 wks vacation but we only take about 1 big trip per year. I need a travel companion because I'd love to travel more and have the time.
I get 4 weeks, but one is assigned for the week between Christmas and New Year's. I generally try to roll over 3-5 days, just in case the next year's vacation is going to be large. The week b/w Xmas and NY is spent with our families, and I guess it sucks we only see them that time of year but...I hate using vacation days to sit at their house and sleep on a futon.

My H gets 5 weeks and he can either get paid 1-1/2 time or get extra vacation days if he works on the weekend. I'm self-employed so I can take holidays at will for the most part. We've done one week skiing in France, one week in Ireland, we're going a week to Fuerteventura and he's taking a week off after that. We'll probably do some small long-weekend travel/city breaks in Nov and he'll take time off in December around Christmas.
I officially get 4 weeks vacation and 3 personal days, but I bill by the hour so I generally work on the plane and "buy back" a day of vacation per trip. H gets 4 or 5 weeks a year. We use all of it on real get away vacations.
This year we have done Hawaii for a week, Italy for 10 days, another 10 days in Paris / Nice coming up, and a 2 week jaunt to Hong Kong, Australia and Abu Dhabi spanning Dec/Jan. We also usually do 4-5 weekend getaways this year was Portland Maine a few times and NYC.
I freelance in part so I can travel whenever DD has off from school. It's unpaid and I have some crazy weeks/months trying to make up the time away (like right now), but I'm very grateful for the fact that I can pretty much take time off almost whenever I want, even if it's just to do a cheap getaway 2 hours away by train/car to stay with friends.
