They called H's supervisor! Without giving him a chance to tell his supervisor that he interviewed last week (eek-- not good). H is frantically calling his supervisor, who is a good friend and also someone on working with on a project at my job. Yikes; small town dynamics.
They haven't called H yet. They also haven't called his other two references. H is still friends with the department secretary and she hasn't seen anything come across.
This is a good sign, right?
So, it's Friday and no job offer. H spoke with another one of his references, and he hasn't heard from them. It sounds like they called his former and current employers to verify work records but haven't called references. Or, haven't called all of his references.
I feel sick. It really sucks that they called his current employer first.
ETA 2: omg omg omg omg! H received a verbal offer by phone today! They'll flesh out the details and call references this week. Standby for a shit ton of job negotiating/ moving question!
This is a post and run because I have to go hold H's hand and enjoy this. YOU GUYS. WE're moving home. 2 hours from my sister! Who found out last week she's having a baby in May. This is amaaaazing!
I'm so excited/ terrified/ thrilled that I might throw up and then cry. This would mean living near my sister! And getting to work on a PhD! And a legit reason to tell Boss Lady to shove it!
This is good news! I hope that Mr. Lake gets through to his boss and explains everything from his perspective. That's good that they are friends otherwise that could be ugly.
Is he close enough to boss/friend that he can call him at home and give him a heads up? Not that he needs to call the other job back ASAP, but this is his chance to speak to him before boss picks up the message.

Yes, and this is what I'm encouraging him to do. Or, to call and see if he can bring lunch over and share some news. We're very friendly with his supervisor. Like, ugly sweater party and heavy drinking friendly.
Yay! I imagine this means an offer is in the works.
It's good that they didn't reach his supervisor yet. That gives him the chance to call him directly and tell him. He doesn't even have to say "they've already called you," just "hey, here's what's going on, so they may be calling you."
He should tell him asap. Should have told him when he handed out his name as a reference, fwiw.
I agree. Government jobs usually require giving references/ supervisor contact info with the application packet. But people usually call the applicant to give them time to call references. Hopefully this doesn't get H off on a wrong foot with them.
On a related note, what's your blaze of glory plan when you tell boss lady you are quitting in advance of your move?
I kind of want to set up a secret camera in her office and record her expression!
Especially because the way things work out, I have to be in town through December 15. I'm under contract to teach a class at the university (classes start today). I'll keep DD with me, but quit my job effective like October 1 or something so that I have time to wrap up all of my other obligations and get the house sold.
I didn't have a chane to update last night, but H had a chance to speak with his supervisor last night. The supervisor came into the office for the conversation at 5pm and H said it went well. He's going to return the call for a reference today.
In other news, I work with H's other reference, who came into my office and exclaimed loudly that he gave H a great recommendation yesterday. At least two of my colleagues heard and I had to scramble. Ugh; what is it with poor professionalism?
Another non-news update. H's supervisor called them back and gave his reference. It sounds like they've spoke to all of the references that H gave, but no offer yet. Boooo. Wait wait wait wait.
