Hopefully since you are in CA, your Target and other B&M stores will be different, but there are basically no suits to be found at mine (Northeast). I ordered a few on clearance from Athleta, but even those are slim pickings as to sizes.
I have had decent luck with tankinis in the past. There are more options than 1 pieces and with my long torso it's easier to find one that fits.
I have gone to Target mostly in the past. There is also "the suit" from Walmart that was really popular on here a year or two ago - I bought one last year and it's a little short in the torso but close enough that it looks ok on me.
Coverups are great too. I really only wear a suit when I'm in the water. Otherwise I put something on over it. I'm hoping the next time I put one on (in late February) I'll be closer to my goal weight and won't hate wearing one... I haven't worn one at all this summer! (living in the midwest without decent beaches nearby helps with that).

Ya swimsuits are available everywhere, all the time here. It's one of the first things I noticed when I moved. Lol.
Also look into Athleta. They have one piece suits as well as mix and match separates that might work for you.
Yes, my suits are all from Athleta or Lands End. I really like tankinis. The coverage of a one piece but you can mix and match and they are much easier to deal with if you need to use the restroom.

Oh I forgot about the infamous "suit".
I'll look for tankinis, I worry about it emphasizing my tummy issues though...
I haven't been to the beach in months because I'm so self conscious. I hate, hate, my stretch marks all around my thighs.

Good point. I'll be drinking so I'll want easy bathroom access.
I too have gained close to 50 pounds in the last few years and I finally gave in and got a suit before our family vacation in July. I didn't want to spend a lot but I wanted something that was cute (well, as cute as anything can be when it is covering 50 extra pounds of flesh), supportive, and not too expensive. I hope not to fit in it for long so I didn't want to spend a ton. I ended up ordering this www.walmart.com/ip/29507947?reviews_limit=9&productRedirect=true?reviews_limit=9& and I was incredibly happy with it. I actually felt pretty good while wearing it. For $25 I thought it was worth a try.

I have no idea if swim skirts are still "in" but that can help with thigh issues. They do make cuter ones so you don't look like your grandmother. I have a couple that I pair with a tankini top and I feel like that gives me as much coverage as possible for my least favorite areas.
Also, some tankini tops aren't quite as skin tight as a one piece. So that may actually help with tummy issues.
IDK. I hate wearing swimsuits. I should probably put one on more often as motivation to keep losing weight

If you are looking to hide a belly, check out Target. They have a slimming brand that actually works really well. I don't use swimsuits that much, maybe a few times a year but I have had mine for about 3-4 years and it is holding up well.
