Dose depends upon how low you are. Did your doctor make any recommendations? Average I'd say is 2000 IU per day, but as much as 5000 if you are very low, and if you are deficient then a prescription for 50 000 IU per week.
I personally have never noticed a difference in how I feel, but vitamin D is responsible for many different functions in the body.

As should be done with every supplement, make sure the one you choose has the USP verified logo. This ensures that it has passed testing for bioavailability and quality.
I live in Alaska where most people are Vitamin D deficient. I started taking 2000 IU in the winter and I TOTALLY noticed a difference in my mood. It was getting so bad that even my anti-depressant wasn't working.
Now I start upping my intake beginning in October to 2,000 IU, and go back to 1,000 in April.

I didn't notice a difference. I was diagnosed with thyroid disease with the Vit D deficiency so started synthroid and Vit D at the same time and felt the same, lol. I also didn't have any noticeable symptoms, though.

My doctor has me take 50,000 for several months and then when my levels were normal i went to a regular level.... Cannot remember at the moment. I stopped taking them when I was pregnant because of the prenatal :/

Mine is prescription right now - I have to take 50,000 iu per week for 8 weeks and then 2000/day (I think per day? That seems right based on everything in this thread).

I was low, but not super low. I take 1000-2000 IUs/day. I have noticed that in the few months since I started I have gotten fewer migraines. Can't say for sure that's the reason, but it's a welcome change.
