It's not surprising to hear that there are lawsuits being filed against AM. I can understand how people would be pissed, that this person info has been leaked, and lives have been devastated because of it, but on the other hand is it people trying to pass the buck and not taking responsibility that it was their own actions? What are your thoughts?

I don't think they're passing the buck, I think they're getting divorced and figure why not cash in? There's no reason not to sue. It isn't like someone who would use that site has the highest moral standards anyway.

I am not surprised at all. I will say that while yes, what the hackers did was wrong and they should be prosecuted for crimes committed, it also seems that they are taking some additional blame. Hey guess what AM user - yeah, your life may be devastated now, but that is because your actions and you got caught. The hackers didn't make you sign up for an account for AM services, you did that. If you didn't have an account in the first place, this wouldn't even be a problem for you. Reflect a little on that.

Why do "you" get to assign your morals to others?
If the site promised confidentiality in their contracts, they have the right to sue.

Since confidentiality is a promise in their contract I see no problem with the lawsuits. Substitute AM with having confidentiality breached with a not-controversial action online (say buying toilet paper on Amazon) and it would be a no brainier.

This won't be the last account hack of this type. I can't wait to apply this logic when the leak is something like Planned Parenthood or Amazon or your Google search history.

Are you serious with this shit?
DH and I have talked about this a lot. Hacking is illegal and wrong. You don't get to justify it based on morals. I am sure there are a lot of anti choice people who would love to get into PP records.

people keep bringing up pp. I really hope that never happens.

Me too but it's a prime example of a site people could hack claiming morals.

I am not trying to assign morals to others. My post was about the seemingly lack of personal accountability, not the morality. If that was in the contract, fine sue.

I agree that a hack to PP would be awful. That aside, nothing on the internet is safe. Credit cards, websites, hell even the Cloud can be compromised. I honestly cannot believe that AM contractually agreed to "protected identity" to its users and that the users actually believed them. And I will reiterate as I put in my post up thread, I am not holding the hackers blameless and they should be legally accountable.
I thought the lawsuits had something to do with the fact that people had paid to have their account information deleted, but once the company was hacked it was apparent that those accounts had never been deleted at all. I might be wrong, though...?

I would have to read the fine print of the Ashley Madison TOS or any other TOS to determine if lawsuits are justified. It doesn't seem insane to me that people are considering it.

it never really occurred to me that it could happen. It is scary, how many people's lives could be invaded and really ostracized from their communities if that info were released.
Although the same thing is true with the am hack. I wish they hadn't opened this door.
