To clarify, I am talking about the gray, alien looking avatar.

True. The generated avatars can start to blend though (some more than others). 

Gold standard is:
distinctive
consistent (it can change but changes should be traceable. See, eg, dick's progressions)
*NOT* moving (there are a few acceptable exceptions)
work safe
not annoying
