We just moved into a new house that's on well water. Our water at the old house was great and I'm having a hard time adjusting. Showering and washing my hands is terrible. We have an iron filter, water softener and reverse osmosis system for drinking water. Is there a soap or shampoo that's better for hard water or is there anything else I can do?
Update:
The service guy came out this morning and said everything is working properly, that it's an adjustment to make between our old city water and the new water. Hopefully your suggestions make showering a better experience. Thanks!
I use Kenra on a daily basis and once a week will use Neutrogena Anti-Residue shampoo. Make sure you have your water softener filled with salt and it doesn't get too low.
You get used to it. You'll be itchy at first, and your hair might get brassy, but it kind of evens out. I don't use anything different - I use a quality shampoo that lathers really well with a small amount. The worst part is the lime and calcium buildup on your faucets and stuff.
Use more shampoo and soap, it helps. We have hard water and my in laws have what I consider to be crazy soft water. When were at their house I always use too much shampoo and spend forever trying to rinse it out. When they're here they do dishes and don't use enough soap and everything is greasy and has to rewashed. But we all do fine getting everything clean at our own homes.
Thanks everyone! I thought I'd need to use less soap, I'll try using more and get some of the suggestions. my work blocked the site for the shower head but I'll check it out when I get home. Follow-up question, we're going to replace all of the faucets and shower heads. Do some finishes hold up better to hard water than others? Everything right now is lovely 70's and 80's gold.
Have you had your water softener serviced/checked? We have well water and have our softener serviced yearly. If it's operating properly, you shouldn't feel like you still have hard water at all. And our guy checks the water output afterwards to make sure all the readings are okay.
