No, thankfully, and I also don't mind them, but I think I would be scared of them if I had to check the damn backyard every time I wanted to let my kids play. That would certainly change things for me!
Yes I've been bitten, but luckily didn't break the skin. I was gardening and heard something in the grass, then a hiss, then saw the snake just in time for it to lunge and PLUNK bite me on my muck boots. I screamed and ran away. I'm sure it was a black rat snake, I saw them all the time at the old farmhouse. We had one on the roof (shudder) and one in the LIVING ROOM (double shudder). Thank god DH was at home both times and dealt with it (aka killed it with a machete). One of the many reasons we moved out of the old farmhouse.

Your husband is not popular around here, but he gets points for this lol.
No. We've only ever found non venomous snakes near our house, thank goodness. We actually have spent a good bit of time educating our kids about snakes. I HATE THEM.
No, but my mom stepped on one barefoot. It was on our welcome mat. I grew up in Florida and lived by a lake. Snakes were so prevalent we had a neighborhood watch for them. Have shovel, will behead at a moment's notice.
There were also gators that roamed my college campus. Police officers were trained on how to escort them if they ended up in a high density area.
No. But I do visual sweeps most times I go out in the yard. Why? We have a family of garter snakes living under and around our house. Most of the summer there have been 2 regularly in the front garden. Last summer on 2 separate occasions I was in the back yard and almost stepped on one in the middle of the lawn. I know they're not poisonous and are more than likely going to hightail it out of there. But it's very startling to look down and see a snake inches from your foot.
I'm happy to have them there for mouse/chipmunk control, I just don't want to step on one

Wear shoes, all the time, good solid ones. We live in the land of copper heads. One of DS's friends was bitten when he was 3. He had been playing in a creek, in the city, not the country side, and his shoes got wet, so he was barefoot walking home. He stepped on it. He didn't tell his dad, and when they set down to lunch at home, his foot was swelling up quickly. 3 days in ICU, $50K in anti-venum, and he was fine again. We wear shoes!
