LOL, this reminds me of when we were emptying my aunt's house in ME. They lived year round quite a distance from town, so my uncle had loaded guns all over the place. Most interesting find was a small pistol hidden in a hollowed book. Title of said text was Best Disciplinary Practices in Secondary Education.
My librarian BFF sometimes does book crafts like this using things like computer manuals and SAT prep books from the 90's. I think it's a great way to upcycle books that no one is going to read anymore.
Those are cute, but as a nerd the idea of cutting the good part out of a book makes me kinda sad.
This is how I feel too. I cringe inside when I see people destroying books in the name of crafts.
ETA: I'm glad to see no great literature was destroyed.
I hollowed out a couple of my husband's physics textbooks from college (so ~1975 or earlier) so my kids could have them for trinkets and memorabilia. I would not have done it with his scifi books, but my favorite part is that the books have margin notes in his handwriting.

I love it.
As a librarian, we are always having to discard books that are damaged, broken spines, etc. Or obsolete like old test prep books. So there are plenty of books you can get your hands on like the ones at the dollar store, that really aren't going to be read anymore.
I also like Forrest's idea of the hollowed out books for jewelry or whatever.
