Update: My husband decided that he hates both options and would rather just re-do the walls and have the carpet professionally cleaned. Instead of giving it to guests he said it can be M's big boy room and we'll match everything to the blue. lol. So, I guess M is going to have a delightfully tacky blue room. I will be working on that project in October/November, so I'll post photos when it's done. You can roll your eyes with me
The previous owner re-carpeted the upstairs one month before we bought the house, with the exception of one room that was being used as storage and he couldn't access. It has nasty blue carpet and needs TLC.
We can't decide whether to replace it with the exact same matching carpet (about $500) or self lay engineered hardwood ($350-$400).
The cost difference is minimal but our thought is that the carpet isn't high quality and we'll most likely want to do wood upstairs everywhere within 10 years. But, if the same wood isn't available then it isn't really saving much effort. Would you just do carpet to keep it matching?
Since you're not doing hardwood in the near future, I would do carpet. It would probably be hard to find matching hardwood several years later, so I would take the easy option.
Is there a reason that you aren't doing hardwood everywhere now? I would do hardwood in that room even if you might have to replace it later, because even if you end up having to replace it when you re-do the rest of the house.... at least it's less of that blue carpet you have to stare at between now and then. Either way, you'll be out about the same amount of money.

Oh the carpet everywhere else isn't blue, it's a neutral dark beige. If it was blue that stuff would already be out! Haha.
We aren't going to do it all now because it would be thousands of dollars and the new carpet is fine for now. Other projects are higher priority.
Is this a room with a door? If so, I don't really think it matters if the flooring matches the rest of the flooring on the same level. In that case, I would go with whatever flooring you prefer for the long term. If you want to eventually do all hardwoods upstairs, I'd just do the hardwoods in that room now. No sense in redoing the flooring twice. I wouldn't worry too much about not being able to match the wood later, whatever you pick will probably still be available, or at least something close. If it's a closed room, I don't really think it will matter if it's not exact.
The biggest thing to me is if you do the hardwood ideally you would like it to lead through the area seamlessly and you would have the seams from doing some now and some later. Also, you might completely change your mind on what kind of wood you would want in a few years when you get around to doing the rest.
I would also be the odd one and say that I am not a fan of hardwood floors either though. I much prefer the laminate flooring. We did laminate in our house and not only is it cheaper it holds up better in my opinion. (Well with a dog there isn't as much damage to the flooring when he's running around when his nails need to be clipped.)

We have laminate on our main floor and I hate it. Maybe it's a bad kind, but it doesn't look nice. Our last place had wood and while more work, I liked the look better. But we don't have dogs. I wouldn't do wood with big dogs.

The laminate that we did looks like wood, I'll see if I can find a picture of it for you.

I posted an update in the OP, but I'd still love to see your photo if you can find it. For future reference, and for our basement. We haven't chosen a floor for that yet.
Not the greatest pictures but it still shows the cut and color of the flooring. (Wow was it hard to find a good picture of the flooring.) Edit: an the cute pup is in both pictures.
That's probably the best solution... When you're ready to replace all of the flooring, you can pick what you like and have it all seamless, and won't waste money on redoing it multiole times. I think you can make it look cute, blue isn't the worst color to work with! Definitely share pics!
