I typically sip Gatorade for the first 5 miles (sits better in my stomach than plain water), if I need it, then eat a couple of Honey Stinger chews and chase them with water every 2 miles after that. However, I am not sure if Gatorade will be given at my race, so I have been starting with the chews and water earlier.
I also like the shot bloks. I can't stand the texture of the gu's. My timing varies when I am training but during a full, I will take one shot blok at the start of the race and then one blok every 3 miles. I can't stomach 3 bloks at one time. It's too much for me. During training runs over 12, I take one blok every 4 miles usually.
I don't do anything during a run that is less than an hour unless it is super hot. Any run over an hour, I carry a water bottle. I'll use gu and take one every 30-40 minutes. I live where there are a lot of natural springs, so I time runs to pass by them when I need to refill. If it's really hot/humid, I carry Gatorade.
I go by miles, just because it's easier for me mentally. My watch buzzes at each mile, so I wait for the buzz. FWIW I'm at anywhere from an 8:45-10 minute mile, depending on the weather and how I feel.
6+ miles=water every mile, just a swig 8+ miles=3 shot bloks before I go, 3 at the half way point
For my half in 2 weeks I'll probably do 3 before, 3 at mile 4 and 3 at mile 8. I've done that in the past and it's worked well for me.
