Who the fuck are the people who think a tank top isn't acceptable attire?
"Tank top" to me = this. I wear beige camis UNDER my tank tops. But maybe I'm the weirdo here. :-)
The difference between this top and the one in your OP is about a half inch of fabric. Either of these can look fine or horrid, depending on how they're worn.

the thin straps and nude color are what make it look like a cami to me. I don't know that I would side eye someone else wearing it as a top, but I wouldn't

I think material is different. Above is a tank top. I thought the op was about a camisole?
My camis and tanks are made of pretty much the same fabric, a stretchy cotton blend. If the cami in the OP is made of lingerie fabric, then that may be a different situation.

I wouldn't, but I see other people do it and I don't care. I mean, I do wear just a nursing tank/nursing cami when I'm running on a few hours of sleep and the baby's sleeping in my room and I don't want to throw on a tee shirt and I'm just not caring and, and, and...Ha, you see what I mean. To me, it's a cami meant to be worn under other shirts, but if I had a less curvy figure up top, I might!

I voted as something I wouldn't wear, not others. I see that as a cami to be worn under other things and not a tank top to be worn in hot weather on its own. I would look naked in it.
Does a shirt need to cover shoulders and neck to be acceptable?
Amish attire?
I think "acceptable" was the wrong word choice. I guess any article of clothing is "acceptable" to at least one person out there.
This question came to mind because I saw a woman from a distance wearing a nude cami and I would have bet $50 she was topless. I personally wouldn't want to risk every looking topless in public.
Ahh got it. So it is the color choice, making her look topless, which makes it unacceptable to you?
That thought didn't even cross my mind since that shirt is nowhere near my color skin.
Regardless, I understand why some people might not wear it themselves, but I think it definitely passes the American test of an acceptable shirt to wear in public without getting crucified and landing on America's worse dressed list....which is what I thought your poll was essentially asking.

Oh - so it's the color, not the style? Because a beige version of the tank top you posted as an acceptable shirt would have had a similar effect from a distance.

1) Where do you live that when you see someone from a distance who is all one color you think "topless" not "wearing something skintone"? (St. Tropez? Black Rock City? New Orleans at Mardi Gras? 17th century Papua New Guinea?)
2) Given that you live someplace free spirited enough that "topless" is a reasonable expectation, how did you end up so uptight about t-shirt styles?

Color choice yes. But I think in any color that type of cami is not meant to be worn by itself as a shirt. But, I wear a cami like every day under just about everything I wear so that might skew my opinion. :-)
I realize now I was about 15% clear in what I was asking. :-)
I asked about camis last year on ML and, surprisingly, most of the people who weighed in didn't wear a cami daily. I remember some people saying it was for old people, I think. Ha. So, that might skew things here.
