I can't open FB anymore bc of the frequency of drowned children photos. It's a journalistic viewpoint I can't get behind.
I am so glad no one on my feed felt the need to share them.
i have no idea what you guys are talking about and I'm glad.
At this point I barely read Facebook. I post a lot but I rarely read it because there is just so much stuff on there I don't want to see, for whatever reason.
Idk I think people who join the military are pretty impressive generally. I wouldn't want to risk my life that way (and typically I don't think they are paid that much). I wouldn't want my kids to risk theirs either.

They're refugees from Syria. I know the issue, but I can't get behind publishing photos of dead bodies, particularly children.
Ever.
It did lead me to learn about this, which is pretty amazing.
our DCP's granddaughters are there after school some days and they annoy me sooooo much. They interrupt and throw huge fits (and they are like 8 and 10, so too old for fits like that IMO). They love DD but will not give her personal space. I feel like snapping at them some days to shut up and go to another room so I can talk to our DCP.
I know I was a huge PITA at that age too though and I'm sure DD will be as well. Older kids just irritate me so much. Hopefully I grow more patient by the time DD is that age.

(Flameful), but I know people who have joined with seemingly no consideration of the fact that they may have to actually go to war (pre 9/11 mostly) simply to get career training or whatever.
swizz I am aware of the issue too and it is heartbreaking. I am grateful those photos are not popping up in my feed. I am not sure how I feel about whether or not they are appropriate in the context of journalism but I know I do not need to see images like that to understand the seriousness of the issue.
How people are opposed to ANY immigrants coming into this country (outside of criminals, spies, those carrying communicable diseases etc) I will never know, but ESPECIALLY refugees.

My military coworkers and I (we're all Air Force) were talking about this the other day. It's no wonder people join for the training, benefits, education, "to see the world" etc when that is what is promised to them by advertisements and recruiters! We make a big deal about what the military can do for THEM and then wonder why we end up with people who "just signed up to do 4 years and get the GI bill." SMH.

I told H last night that I didn't like my kids. They weren't misbehaving. Just getting on my nerves.
"Mommmy!!! MommmmYY!"
"What?"
"I have a scab on my knee"
I DON"T FREAKIN CARE.
I like them again today and I will always love them....but man...

This was my H. Except it was like November of 2001. He was told by the recruiter that medics rarely go to war and his chances were slim. That recruiter lied. He spent 2004 and 2005 in Iraq.
He was in it for med school to be paid for.
I know the men in his platoon whose lives he saved consider him a hero but the act of being in the service itself isn't one.*
*of course we should all be greatful as a nation that they do it so we don't have to
UO: I think that not wanting to see pictures related to the consequences of war, the reality that other human beings are experiencing, is a pretty big sign of privilege. Must be nice for us, not living in war torn societies, to just shove our heads in the sand and pretend life isn't horribly shitty for people in other countries. And yes, for children in other countries. So shitty they put their lives at risk trying to escape.
I think we apply the term hero too broadly. Just because someone is in the military, or is a cop, doctor, teacher, nurse, etc, they are not automatically a hero. Those people all collect paychecks and are compensated for their jobs. They're not volunteers.
Some are good, some are bad, and a few are heroic.
I agree with this. As does my husband who spent 6 years in the military. His job was pretty cushy in respect to others. When people thank him for his service or make a big deal out of it he feels awkward. He was deployed several times and was away from home quite a bit, but over all it wasn't too terrible.
I bought shoes that match my cat today. They are from the Taylor Swift for Keds collection and the print is inspired by Tay-Tay's 1989 album. I was born in 1979.

edited for a typo that affected meaning.
Thank you. It disgusts me to see people complaining about having to see/learn about these refugees.
This confession is embarrassing Just now I could not figure out how to make a call on my cell. I ended up clicking from a text but I could not figure out how to get the number screen. My phone icon ended up being hidden in some other section but I felt pretty dumb.
And right turn. I hate to see the body of a child, but only my activist friends were posting about the refugees until today. Now everyone is posting. It took a child to die. To see his little feet. My Moms group wants to try to sponsor a family. If that was my child, I would want people to see. To care. To empathize.

In light of the sleep chart floating around FB ... I don't care that dd goes down at 8:30-9p when according to the chart she should be going down at 7:30p
I'm a single mom who works ! By the time we get home, make & eat dinner, get through hw and I actually get some time to spend w her it's 8:30p. I don't know they expect households w/o a sahp to be able to get to kids to bed THAT early ?!?
My kid just sang the entire national anthem of Enchancia (the fictional kingdom where Sofia lives) from memory. I'm not sure she has ever heard the US national anthem.
There are 2 days a year where I'm off work and daycare is open. One of those days falls on DH's birthday. I don't know yet if he has the day off, but I'm kinda hoping he doesn't so I can spend the whole day by myself. I haven't had a day to myself since January, except one day where I was super sick, which kinda took the fun out of it.

My kid would laugh if I put her to bed that early. And still not fall asleep until 9.
Actually, I am going to dial it up a notch. In terms of the journalistic aspect of those photos? That is essentially how the tide turned in popular opinion with regards to Vietnam...once photos of the war became mainstream, when the general public could see what was happening thousands of miles away, that's when people started to question if the war was worth it, whether it was being fought for the right reasons, in the right ways...so this isn't new and it isn't wrong, it is what HAS to happen in order for anyone to actually give a flying fuck about what happens as a result of war and genocides. The visuals are graphic and horrible and hard to see and that fucking matters. I didn't put my fucking 15 month old in a boat at the cottage this summer because I wasn't confident that she wouldn't stand up and tip the boat. These people put their kids in a boat, at night, in the fucking ocean. How bad would their reality had to have been to do that? I mean really?? But the photo isn't nice to look at? No shit.
Edit: sorry for all the f-bombs. I should have been able to make my point without them.
On a per capita basis, Canada accepts more refugees than anyone. In case you needed more reasons that Canada is AWESOME.
Does anyone know what the effective charities are on the ground? Red Cross/Crescent? Some NGO devoted to getting EU countries to get off their collective asses?

Unfortunately, our current government has really curtailed our refugee program, made cuts to refugee healthcare and actually denied refugee status to this particular little boy's family (his aunt lives in BC and tried to sponsor them). Please don't put Canada on a pedestal on this issue. We suck pretty bad regarding this right now.
But if you want some feels, go find the video of Tom Mulcair talking about this today on the campaign trail. Nice to see heartfelt empathy from a political leader.
Absolutely. It's another reason to hate Harper, as if we needed one. Good on Justin Trudeau for calling the gov't out as they tried to change their tune today...you don't get to have an anti-refugee stance for years on end and then suddenly grow compassion over night when people suddenly care.
