I can see how it would be difficult to get widespread use of a prevention pill, but this is really excellent news. I think certain groups, particularly partners of HIV positive people, are very likely to benefit.
How do they actually test this? Do you sign up for the study and assume the risk of getting HIV? Seems risky.
I'm puzzling this out too. My assumption is that you know the average infection rate in known high risk communities. You get a large enough sample size for it to be representative of the community then you track actual infection rates. I don't think you sign up for the study and they tell you to go find someone with HIV to test it out on.
I have 3 patients in my practice using this as prevention. I haven't asked them about their behaviour but it's interesting how quickly it's use is being adopted
