Wow, that's crazy! I agree with the teachers but I feel for all the parents scrambling for daycare. The idea that recess isn't mandatory is shocking to me!
No COL for six years?! And less than 6 percent over three years?
Yeah, I see why they're done. When, oh when, will we start to prioritize public education? The longshore man can make 100,000 a year, though, so that's good.
An 18 percent increase? Basically the COL they would have gotten. That's a huge amount up front.
What's the dollar cost of that increase to the district?
It's 6%/yr X 3 yrs... And from what I hear, it's not on their whole pay, only on the % that's paid by the city (as opposed to the state).
The city also got extra state $ for education, and (again, from what I hear) this amounts to less than that ($11M of $17M)... I could be way off on that, though, as I've read about a bazillion things on the issues.

This just really makes me want to cry. I totally confess to being bent out of shape about my kiddo's first day of kindy being marred, but fuck it. Schools have gotten screwed for too long. His first day - whenever it is - better come out of a compromise and not out of a goddamn court order. It makes me sick to think that teachers could be FORCED back to work. Way.to.go.Washington.

I'm bummed about kids missing the "first day of school" feeling and my kids are 1st and 4th. I can't imagine with a kindergartner. But I fully support our teachers in this strike so I feel guilty feeling bummed.
Our kids are going to boys and girls club, which thankfully scrambled to open for any current members. The kids and I made some muffins this morning and dropped them by the picket line of their school on the way to BGC. (And this may sound creepy but I think we're in the same neighborhood?) Having them see their teachers on strike and getting a better understanding of what it meant made for a great discussion with them.

Yep, we signed up on our school's soup for teachers site, and delivered tons of snacks and lunch stuff this morning before I went to work. Sam got out of the car chanting "strike strike strike!" lol.
Some states prohibit public employees from striking. Texas is one. So is FL.
We can't strike either. Union power! What are they going to do, fire 5300 teachers?
The federal government did it with air traffic control.
I would think it depends on your area. Some have major shortages. Some have major issues with over saturation so it would be easy to say " if you strike, you are gone."
That would cause enough (me included) to cross the picket line.

I can assure you that in this situation that teachers are not crossing picket lines if there is an injunction. We have had enough. Parent support is amazing. I created a FB page on Monday for our school to keep parents informed. There are over 230 families that have joined. Kids and parents were walking the line, made signs and they brought us coffee and snacks.
We are not allowed to have Unions. We are in a non-Union state. We have professional organizations but they're fairly limited with regards to any actual power.
This makes me want to scream! Unions created the 8 hour day and made child labor illegal. I can't believe that in this day and age people are not allowed to organize and create unions.

Same! Holy damn I wish NC could do this. No Union, we are getting so dicked over right now
North Carolina teachers need to rise up and organize! It's bad over there!

I'm in Maryland- we are unionized, but not allowed to strike. Our union basically has zero power. We got a 1% COL raise in 2009 and just got another 1% plus a step increase this year. I should be making over 60K according to the published salary schedule (11 years experience with a masters degree), but I am only making 51k because they froze our step increases in 2006.

This is what they have alluded to doing here in Ontario. It wouldn't affect me but it would totally affect DH. Still hoping it won't!!

It's not even legal for us to try and form a union.
Yep, SC teacher here. We're a right to work state. I could be terminated for anything - a picture of beer on facebook that a parent found (not even on her page) did one of my colleagues in over our morality clause.
