If you don't have any preference on airline, I would use kayak.com to check rates across multiple companies. I also usually book directly with hotels/resorts. That generally gives me the best price on accommodations. You definitely do not need a travel agent for an AI vacation.
If you tell us in general where you are flying from and what your budget might be, we can offer more specific suggestions on where to go.

Set a budget and then see what you can do for that amount.
You can always look at cruises. If you are booking far enough out you can make payments and spread out the cost over a few months and have time to save up fun money for the trip.
Are you a member of AAA? You can always go in and talk to one of their travel agents to get an idea of what is out there.
Southwest has non-stop flights from BWI to a variety of Caribean destinations. Might be worth checking out separately since they won't appear on kayak.
If you are going to do an AI, generally the package including airfare, airport transportation and hotel is cheaper than individual. Check a bunch of sites to get an idea of what price range you would expect. You can try airlines vacation sites (delta vacations, aa vacations, apple vacations, etc).
Any places in the Caribbean you have been before? You could do an AI, or try a cruise. For cruises, we often get the airfare separately.
We did Puerto Rico some years ago, but not an AI. For PR, you can rent a car easily and drive out of San Juan to some nice places on the island, and San Juan is fun. Lots of great restaurants in San Juan and Puerto Rico.
I have also heard good things about St. Lucia and St. Maarten, but those would probably not be AI.

Southwest has recently added a lot more flights to the Carribean and Mexico direct from BWI. We flew from BWI to the Dominician Republic for spring break last year. We stayed at Casa De Campo. It's not all inclusive but it's a fantastic resort for families. It's a bit pricey but worth it.
I think the Dominican Republic or Mexico would be your best bets for direct flights and AI resorts. The Cancun area has tons of AI resorts.
One thing to keep in mind with spring break is the time of year it is. Ours is really early this year (late March) so we are looking very far south. We've been to Florida for several spring breaks and it was still fairly cold. The earlier it is the further south you'd need to go to be assured warm weather.
