The reason many of you do not get the love for Bluebell is because the quality has gone down. It used to be creamier and have a better flavor profile. I started eating HEB ice cream instead which was similar to the older creaminess.
For those of you not from Texass, HEB is a Texas only grocery store that makes most of its own generics.
Blue Bell will survive and do just fine. Unfortunately. You guys should have seen the lines on August 31st! People were buying their beloved ice cream like it was freaking crack. Crazy. I personally know too much now and would like to support a local brand but just can't. I'm appalled by some of what is coming out. So gross.
However. I think there is a lot about food production in general that I just don't want to know about. Ignorance is bliss.
Wow. Sounds like the exact opposite of how Jeni's handled their listeria issue.
Mmmm Jeni's. I heard they've really moved toward sorbets since the listeria problem. I appreciate their caution. (But I'll still destroy some Almond Brittle at any opportunity.)
I think it's probably just a matter of what they could produce quickly, available ingredients, etc. I think they're just about back into full swing.
My favorite ice cream is Amy's, specifically Mexican Vanilla. It's super local, not sold in stores, and DELICIOUS!
Also I love Tillamook dairy anything! My favorite is their Greek yogurt and I can't get it here at all. BOO We visit the creamery every time we go out to Oregon.
i understand that but are regulations set up to guarantee no one ever dies from product use ever? there might just be an acceptable death rate even for the FDA for products.
so a few people died in the beginning. regulations then prevented the death of 10000s more.
I would say no, the regs won't prevent every illness or death from a manufactured. They can't. Even with a company's best effort, things happen that will allow tainted/ineffective/some other bad thing product to get through to the market. The company is supposed to adhere to regulations and their current interpretations, and make their best, most compliant effort towards perfection. This company was not, not by any stretch of the imagination.
Things get recalled everyday. Recalls are a ton of work and are expensive. REALLY expensive. But the majority of recalls you see listed on the FDAs site are voluntary. Those companies are making an effort to ensure that quality product is what's available for use/consumption. That's the right thing to do. Not ignore all the warning signs and wait until the FDA MAKES you recall your product.

I haven't had it in ages, but I assume the decline in quality is related to the expansion in size?
My MIL thinks blue bell is the best which is how I know it's not. She just wants a large amount of an item that is priced higher but goes on sale. She thinks it's amazing but it's just average. Maybe above average.
But she'd never even consider buyers a pint of Graeters even on sale because it's like $3 on sale. Not a good enough deal.
Seriously though she talks about Blue Bell a lot. Maybe I will send her this article so she doesn't die.
I just don't understand this "fuck yeah product that could kill me!!" I mean, you don't see "god bless walter white" signs for a product that could kill you too.
I wouldn't feel bad if any of those assholes died from ice cream. sorry, not even a little bit sorry
Not to mention this is a TERRIBLE employer. Look at all the shit they did!!!

It probably is related to the expansion in size and readily available flavors. When I used to eat it exclusively you could only get five flavors at a time. The fifth one changed quarterly, so there were many flavors, but not at all stores.
Since I don't live in Brenham, I do not know if the timing of the expansion is really to blame.
This is why we need government regulations, people. I would like to direct conservatives to this right here and would like to hear how the free market would prevent things like this from happening when companies clearly will only do the bare minimum required by law, public health and safety be damned.
to be a devil's advocate:
but do you really think BB is going to survive this? they will go out of business and the free market will have worked.
Well, if that happens, only because it came out they didn't follow regulations.
And I don't think it will anyway. My friends in Texas who are blue bell obsessed have been defending them through this all.
Not that I ate Blue Bell before anyway, but you couldn't pay me to eat it now. As a someone with a nearly 100% firm no voting record in WYET threads, I don't play around with what goes in this temple . When these scandals happen, I usually keep track and stay away for life. As it happens, I've been lucky enough not to eat most of the offending products in the first place, but Blue Bell is on the list right along with other offenders like Fresh Express bagged salad and Peter Pan peanut butter. Ben & Jerry and Talenti for life.

Amy's Mexican Vanilla is my all time favorite, especially with fresh strawberries mixed in -- BEST. EVER.
But then y'all also have Lick which is the most insanely amazing ice cream I've ever experienced.
....WHATEVER. STOP MAKING ME WANT SOMETHING THAT'S 3+ HOURS SOUTH, AJL! #cries

Goat Cheese-Honey-Thyme ice cream is seriously the holy grail of ice cream!

I do. The governor of Texas made a JOKE about Blue Bell returning to shelves not that long ago on his Facebook page. There were a few comments that called him out on how inappropriate it was to joke about something that caused the death of children, but most of the comments were such enlightened things as "God bless Texas and God bless Blue Bell!"
I also think a lot of people don't know how bad the safety practices were. All I heard my family talk about was anxiously awaiting the return of Blue Bell, not concern that Blue Bell would be unsafe going forward.
I didn't realize the company had expanded so quickly. I used to really love something about the fact that there was such a small area where you could buy Blue Bell. I think there is something to smaller, more regional products instead of everything being nationally marketed. I heard a story on NPR this morning about how craft beer sales are up so much that MillerCoors sales have been down, and the company is closing a plant in North Carolina. It made me think of one of my favorite Wisconsin breweries, New Glarus, which has enough of a cult following to support distributing throughout the Midwest but the owners are adamant that it stay a small operation with Wisconsin-only distribution. There is something admirable about that commitment to quality, IMO, even if it means you can't be the biggest ever.
I always wondered why I could never find Spotted Cow anywhere outside of Wisconsin.
