Those prices are horrifying. How do these assholes sleep at night. Thousands of dollars for a month's supply? Hundreds of dollars for a single pill? It's criminal. This isn't a new issue but damn it can't continue like this.
I'm a pharmacy director and see this weekly. Old drugs essentially become brand name ones again as only one company makes them. I've seen drugs go from pennies per tablet increase to $10 overnight.
The FDA has recently tightened manufacturing requirements and changed documentation processes for some products and that has lead to some price increases. Although it doesn't seem to be the case this time.

I was just going to post the same thing. How the heck do these douchebags sleep at night? This is ridiculous.

even so, I don't think that justifies a 5,450% increase.

No not in this case but every time the FDA changes a drugs category it changes the manufacturing process slightly and the companies pass on the cost to the consumer. This can be as little as a switch in wording. I have seen large drug companies do incredibility generous things too. This is a case of a legal loophole expert gouging the government and private insurance companies.

They sleep on huge piles of money, because our society rewards douchebaggery as long as it's profitable.

I posted about this on MM, let me see if I can find and link. One of the drugs I take was purchased by the same "company" mentioned in the article and it went from costing $750 to over $7k a month in just a couple of months. This company doesn't do R&D. They basically are buying uncommon drugs, price gouging, and then will take them off the market when insurance companies finally get around to NDC blocking their drugs in a year. In the meantime they are making bank.

I'm so conflicted what to do over the drug I take. It is still costing me the same amount each month, but it drives me insane that my insurance is paying so much more for it. I'm sure it's not going to last forever, but I feel incredibly guilty increasing overall health care system costs. I called the new owner of the molecule, they do not accept calls and just route back to the call center of the company who originally marketed the drug. The agents I've spoken to are incredibly frustrated, they have no training about what is happening and are completely stuck. I've called my insurance company to ask them to look into, they act like I have 4 heads for bringing the issue to them. I hope congress looks into this. I work in pharma and I'm a pharmacist myself and am completely horrified by what these companies are doing. It is pure price gouging, no way around it. They are hoping no one notices and calls them on it, that's why they are sticking to rarely used drugs.

So I just googled this CEO. He is a piece of shit. I don't understand how some of the things he has done aren't considered criminal. He has gone so far as to try to interfere with FDA approval of certain drugs so that he can make more money. I guess we are ok with it though. As long as someone is doing something in the interest of making money, we don't seem to have any issue with it in this country. Capitalism at its best!

That is abhorrent. There should be laws against this.

What drug categories are you referring to? Are you talking class A, B, and C, or something else?
My MIL is getting chemo right now and needs a shot every week to help her WBC go up. The shot is $12,000 a shot. 12FUCKINGTHOUSAND DOLLARS.
Thank God she qualified for assistance in her care.
I fucking hate these people.
My BIL had to get that same shot this past summer when he was going through chemo. They made him sign a document that he is aware of the cost. My mouth dropped to the floor when he told me.

I think it's so fucked up that our country pretty much gives people the option of die, or try to save your life and go bankrupt in the process.
My grandson's mother (he was adopted) didn't file bankruptcy in time. They lost their house, their life savings, retirement. Everything. They had to start over in their late 40s with two kids.
But at least she's alive and a survivor. They're an amazing family and I am privileged to know them.

I did too and I'm kicking myself that I didn't screen shot his wiki entry. Up until the last edit (three minutes ago), it included the sentence "he is not a nice person" which would make me laugh were it not an understatement.
Eta: people are going to town on his wiki, it now says "In 2001, Shkreli had sex with his mother and she yelled at him for not pleasing her". link The other edit was better imho. Doubt this one will last long though.
